Outlook 2016: Cannot Open Message by Double Clicking After Running Search on Inbox

Throughout the technical preview for Office 2016, I found the following error in Outlook while running it on several machines. I used the reporting tool "frown" to report the bug, but the smile face tool is no longer available.  The problem is still not fixed even on the version of Outlook I am now running, which is Version: 16.0.4229.1014.

Description of Problem: Run a search from within the Inbox of Outlook.  Results show messages but messages cannot be opened via double-click; they must be opened via right-click an selecting "Open."  Also, after the search is run, the Reading Pane does not work until clearing the search.

Hi,

Might you help me further isolate the issue?

I did as you instructed and ran the "outlook.exe /safe" command and the problem cleared.  I closed Outlook, reopened and unchecked all of the add-ins.  I then closed and reopened Outlook and the problem reappeared.

This is only a problem for me on two machines running Outlook 2016.  I have another machine that is running Outlook 2013 and the problem doesn't occur on that machine.

By the way, I've already attempted to use the Office Online Repair to no avail.

Any further suggestions?

Hi Melon,

I believe I found the problem.  After running a search test on the Inbox and not being able to double-click to open a e-mail on the search, I went to View Settings and selected Other Settings, which brought up the window shown below.  I decided to uncheck the two boxes circled in red in the pic below, saved the changes and then then closed and ran Send/Receive (to hopefully update the Exchange Server).  I then closed Outlook and reopened it, ran a search on the Inbox and found that my e-mails showing up from the search could now indeed be opened up when double-clicked.

Thanks for your feedback.  Problem is resolved.

Hi Melon,

I spoke too soon.  Problem not resolved.  This is a bug.

If "Show as Conversations" is selected, you cannot double-click and open any message in the Inbox after a search was performed.  Unchecking the selection results in allowing double clicking on any message after a search.

Can you tell me why this is so?
