Outlook 2013 deleting emails

I have thought for a while that I seemed to be losing some emails with 2013, but finally have some proof.  I was looking at an email this morning sent to me last night, closed the email, went on to something else, tried to go back to it and it wasn't there.  I have searched the whole database, and looked in deleted items.  Finally tried "recover deleted items", and it wasn't there either.  At this point I thought maybe I was going slightly mad and had imagined the email, so I used message tracking on the Exchange server to see that it it had existed, and had been sent to me.  I can't think of a way to make this happen if I wanted to, I can only assume that since it isn't in the exchange recovery list, it is actually there somewhere but hidden.  I will have to revert to Office 2010, if I can't trust emails.

For the sake of completeness, it is not visible with OWA or an Outlook 2010 client.  I am accessing an Exchange 2007 server.

Are you only using Exchange account in your Outlook 2013? Have you checked if the message is in junk mail folder?

I suspect that somebody or add-in removed the message as your unexpected. If you set the delegete or full access permission, please cancel it. Disable the 3rd party add-ins in Outlook client to check if it happens again.

On the Exchange site, I recommand that we enable Mailbox Audit Logging for your Mailbox to track the event unexpected.

I am only using Exchange, and yes I have checked the Junk Mail folder.  I can't see how the item can have been removed in a way that also removes it from the Exchange deleted items copy by anybody.  Whilst it might (indeed must) be possible to do this programmatically, it has never happened with Outlook 2010.  The only non-Microsoft Add-in that is running is Apple iCloud which is essential for syncing my phone and therefore cannot be disabled. Looking at mailbox audit logging, I can't really see how this will help, since I can't see any event in there which would correspond to the problem experienced.  Given that I have been using 2013 for 7 weeks now, and this is the first time I have actually been able to prove a lost email rather than just suspecting something has been lost, I think this would be too large an undertaking.  Since I also have issues with the loss of functionality in Word 2013, I think reverting to 2010 is the way ahead.

I have the same problem, I have it set to leave message on server yet every time I download a message it gets deleted off the server.  I think there is something wrong with the leave message on server.  As soon as I receive the message I go to Hotmail and the message appears in my POP folder which contains all the emails deleted hope you can help thanks

Mike,

I think you probably have a different issue since you are using Hotmail.  In your browser log into your Hotmail account and in upper right click Options button.  Under Managing your account click POP and deleting downloaded messages.  This setting explains why you would see the POP folder.  It looks like this could happen if you are using POP to download your Hotmail emails using programs like Mac Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird.  I am not an expert on the Hotmail settings so if you still need more info on that please post to the Hotmail forums on http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windowslive/forum/hotmail.

I am having the same problem. Not only in the Inbox, but also in the Sent mail folder. There does not seem to be any consistency to what is removed. A customer responded to an email I sent, but when I went back to find what I sent to them, it was gone.

hi there

I have the same problem, a lot of mails disappear from inbox under an IMAP account.
As you know the problem is an auto delete command sent from Outlook 2013 at Mail Server.
This is a part of Activity Log Under IMAP Service:

In the Log that you see above, there is everything the mail client writes on it, so for some reason Outlook 2013 runs this command for deleting those emails.
This happens on 3 new computers, they are the only ones running Outlook 2013. Never happened before on any client with Outlook 2003/2007/2010 and Thunderbird.
Affected Clients:  Windows 7 Pro,  antivirus plug-in is NOD32 antivirus
Server:   Win 2008R2 Std, MailEnable Enterprise 7.08

The same thing is happening in my Outlook 2013.  It is most frustrating.  I have set up folders in my inbox that are now completely or partially empty.  Where did all the mail go?  There are instances that I don't get my mail for hours and then it all comes at once with times within the window that I wasn't getting any.  Today, I started getting e-mail from yesterday out of synch with messages I had already gotten today.  What can I do about this?  I want to find the e-mail that is missing also.  Help!!!

I am having a similar issue on a Windows 8 machine using Outlook 2013. Emails are deleting from Newest to oldest only when Outlook is running. I have done 2 clean reinstalls, have deleted the email account on our webmail host server and recreated it, and have compared setting for setting with other employee accounts who do not have this problem and have not found any differences. They do not delete by any keystroke, is indiscriminate as to which emails get deleted, and leaves no trace behind of the message in any deleted items or message folder on either the local client or webmail.

I have been able to make this same problem happen on another identical machine with the same affected account, but could not make it happen on a machine running Outlook 2010.

January 28th, 2014 8:09pm

One of my o365 users is having the same problem.  She creates a new profile, imports her folder from a .pst (for hours), it syncs and then she opens one of the folders.  She clicks on one of the emails in the folder and then this CASCADE of deleting takes place: dozens of emails are deleted one right after the other.

I am the server admin and I have disable ALL archiving etc.  But still, every time she imports the folders, Outlook 2013 deletes the emails right in front of her eyes.

(sorry about the stupid username, the site refused everything I tried to use, had several "server error" when it did accept a username and I was just desperately typing ANYTHING to allow me to reply to this thread)

I am pretty disappointed in Microsoft for ignoring this thread for so long.  There is a problem, whether it is us admins not understanding something or a bug, it doesn't matter which - WE ARE LOSING EMAILS HERE.  Where is MS support?  Must we all phone India and spend hours on the phone?  Why not fix it ONE TIME here in the forum instead?

I am having the same issue with the Outlook 2013 365 I have "rented". I am no computer genius, but I do know that I am running Windows 7 on my dated laptop.

I have checked in Junk Mail, Deleted, and Archives for our missing mail. It only takes minutes before they are gone, and it doesn't seem to matter whether they are read or not. We are losing important mail and, I don't want to, but I guess I'll have to buy a copy of Outlook 2007. Since no one from MS is replying, it seems that we are at an impasse with them.
