Outlook 2013 archiving doesn't work when cached mode is enabled

Hi All,

I have a problem in Outlook 2013 which I've been able to replicate on two separate PCs, operating against two separate Exchange servers.  In both cases, archiving of old items does not work in Outlook 2013 when cached mode is enabled.  It works fine if cached mode is switched off so I don't believe the problem is related to the archiving settings.

Has anyone else come across this?

Thanks,

I have exactly the same problem on our Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus Volume License installations. Without cache mode archiving to PST is working fine. But archiving with cached mode enabled is not working.

Outlook is connected to Exchange 2010 SP2, but we are planning a migration to Office365 and after that we really want to use cached mode and archive function too.

Define "not working". By default when creating an Outlook profile with cached Exchange mode. Outlook is configured to only cache items that are 12 months old or newer. Mail older than 12 months is viewed the same way it would be if cache mode was disabled completely... I've found that Archiving works, but only for mail that has been cached. If you allow Outlook to cache all mail for that users mailbox (ie. Older than 12 months), Archiving should work. Not sure if this is how it should work by design, but that's the workaround I found to resolve.

See below how to allow Outlook to cache all items in a mailbox;

Ben's answer is definitely correct.  I have just come across the same problem, and found that this was the answer, and a local IT expert has confirmed this as known behaviour.

Archiving will only work on the emails that are stored locally, so if you use Cached Mode but do not store all items locally, those items that are not copied to the offline store will not be "seen" by the archive process and will never be archived.

To solve, click on "File", click on "Account Settings", select "Account Settings".  Double click on the name of the mailbox, and the window shown in Ben's reply will open.  Move that slider all the way to the right.  Archive will now find everything.

Poor design by Microsoft in my view.
