Outlook 2013 To-Do Bar Appointments with only one Day????

Hi!

I just stop using Outlook 2013 Preview and switch back to Outlook 2010 for ony ONE reason:
The Outlook 2013 Preview To-Do Bar show only Appointments from current day.
No overview over the appointments of the next day.

With this tool no one can work!
I think this is a real joke from Microsoft to cancel this feature.

Checked and it seems that's one of the limitations of the to-do bar Calendar. Only shows today's appointments.

Thanks for posting your feedback.  The To-Do-Bar functionality was changed in Outlook 2013 to use the new Peek pinning feature.  We have recieved lots of other feedback to add next day meetings to the Calendar Peek.  Hopefully this functionality can be added in a future update.

How Microsoft is planning to show the user an overview of the next appointments?

Without an appointment overview in the todo bar the using of Office 2013 makes absolutely no sense for me.

VERY SAD!

Absolutely !!!  Many of us rely on the Calendar view in the To Do Bar for near term appointments and I know numerous folks who have gone back to 2010 for this single issue. Please give us back as many entries as there is room for as in 2010.

Huge step backwards to have to open the calendar to see my upcoming appointments/meetings.

Please bring it back.

Hi all,

I used Outlook 2010 for sometime and all my appointments were appeared. But after upgrade to outlook 2013 all my appointments disappeared and only all appointments of the same day appeared.

So I believe now migrating to old version 2010 is amust especially when you have many appointments and need to be prepared before one day.

Please do the needful and advise. . . .

What is the best way to downgrade Outlook 2013 to Outlook 2010?  I installed the full Office Professional 2013 and want to just downgrade Outlook.  Not being able to view appointments over the next few days in the ToDo Bar is extremely disappointing.  Without this feature, Outlook 2013 is not productive for business users and I would like to downgrade until Microsoft adds the feature back.

If you uninstalled Office 2010 before you installed 2013 then just reinstall over the top of it. You can run both. If you didn't tell Office 2013 to uninstall older versions then it probably is still installed so just go look in your programs folder and you might be surprised that it is still there.

I uninstalled 2010 when I installed 2013 so I had just went and reinstalled 2010 and now have both. I will only use Outlook 2010 until Microsoft pulls its head out and fixes this problem. I will not recommend to anyone to install Office 2013 until this issue is corrected. Who is the dufus that designed this? He should be fired.

I mean, I have made the full switch to Windows 8 and am running the Office 2013 RTM and sure, it is different and that can be good (and I actually like Windows 8, even with Metro and without a touch device); but this isn't just different, it is stupid. This was a vital part of my productivity and now I have lost that. I am hoping this is just an oversight and that it will be added in. It seems that this is an enormous complaint all over the internet.

Hopefully it is much sooner than later.

Microsoft, if I wanted a lame email experience I would use Gmail. Stop trying to mimic your competition by ignoring customers and removing features on a whim. If you're trying to alienate your custoimer base, mission accomplished. We can get treated like this for free from the Chocolate factory, we don't have to pay to be shunned.

Better start asking your paying customers (you know the ones keeping your company a float) what features "THEY" want in a email app, not what you feel like providing.

Absolutely awful customer experience program you have running here.

December 18th, 2012 8:30pm

I cannot function without this missing option myself.

I ended up using a workaround (Google the names, no links below) as such with my Win 8 desktop and Office 2013 setup:

Used 8GadgetPack to reinstall the sidebar for gadgets from Win 7,

Downloaded Outlook Appts gadget from Slipstick (page named "Using Windows Gadgets with Outlook")

Copied the download 'OutlookAppointmentsGadget.gadget' to the "%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\" directory

Added the gadget to the sidebar

Changed it to Large to show 5 appts

I realize this isn't optimal but at least I have a preview of the next few appts. Multiple monitors help here as well.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!I thought it was just me and my setup. I have been vouching for MS saying I actually like the new start feature for win 8 once I realized what it was doing with the tile feature and all...SUPER, but to remove the upcoming feature in a CALENDAR, ELECTRONIC NO LESS. After stopping the HTML renderer from Internet Explorer for showing HTML e-mails in favour of MS Word HTML rendering within Outlook this is the 2nd worst decision ever made by Microsoft. They keep ignoring what outlook customers want.

I need this option or I will have to leave outlook as well as many others in favour of a cloud based mail solution.

I also take the opportunity to explain once and for all what I've been waiting for the last 10+ years to become available in outlook:

I work for different bosses. For example one boss on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. I need the out of office option for all other days. So on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Friday I need to have the OUT OF OFFICE setting in Outlook and NO I do not want to configure a rule for this. As every normal backup software has the feature to say when or why to backup I want to be able to say on what days I'm Always out of the office.

Best regards

Wow - I guess the developers at MS don't use their own products to schedule appointments.

January 9th, 2013 3:35am

It isn't just that you only see 1 day's worth of appointments, you can no longer right-click on the appointments and interact with them. You have to switch to the calendar to do anything. This is annoying and makes the product less effecient. I had put a place holder on my calendar for a meeting I was expecting. The meeting invite comes in, and I accept, so then I want to go delete the plaeholder. In Outlook 2010, I just right click on that placeholder event in the todo bar and choose "delete." Now, I have to switch to the calendar, which interupts my work stream.

I am not sure why Microsoft would want to go minimalistic on a product like Outlook, which is generally only used by power users in Enterprise computing settings. What a silly loss of functionality.

January 10th, 2013 4:11pm

Yes as Shane mentioned it is obvious that those who coded this must actually NOT use the product or they would have had some idea on the loss of functionality they were taking out when they did this. They should have made the appropiate changes in the ability to manage these features by allowing them to be enabled again.I think we may stop our 2013 roll out and revert to 2010. We were told this would be a better product for touch screen but I haven't seen that either, there doesn't seem to be ANY advantage to this release, just disappointment.

I am not quite sure why anyone would want to know what they had happening tomorrow and beyond from a glance. I think it is great that once I complete my tasks for the day it is clear and blank. That way I don't have to think about tomorrow until it comes. They are merely helping us not to think about tomorrow's work. Thanks MS, I sleep better and am much happier. *End sarcasm. On another note it would be nice to see in bold days where I have scheduled events, even as a compromise. I don't typically have many events on my list. So at least seeing a day in advance I have a meeting or task to complete will allow me to click on it without randomly checking my calendar.
January 11th, 2013 10:58pm

I have to agree with pretty much everybody in this thread.

If some designer thought it would be a good idea to limit that scope to one day, why didn't someone make it configurable? Back to one - month... At least in the registry...

This behavior reminds me of another company in the industry, I think that have a fruit as their logo...

I am very disappointed

I am using the Office 2013 trial and will not be purchasing, I will revert back to 2010 due to this limitation.

It's quite simple. As I sit here at home at 9 PM I cannot see my appointments for tomorrow morning in the peek or in the To-Do bar. I need to dig into my calendar to know what time to set my alarm. It's utterly absurd that this basic functionality is missing. My Windows Phone does this without issue, not Office 2013.

What is it with MS removing key features in their new products? The removed podcast support on WP8 and Xbox Music, a huge downgrade from Zune/WP7. This is a utterly idiotic trend.

January 16th, 2013 6:06am

Yes, this is a show stopper, we've stopped all deployment for our Org. For the 100 stations in the trial we are roling back to Office 2010. We have this issue and combined with Skydrive Pro not ready and Lync 2013 a complete mess, this is clearly not production ready software.

The team that decided to remove this feature should all be terminated. They clearly have no clue what they are building. This is why you place in Bussiness Aalysts into the process to ensure coders don't do foolish things as clearly they do not use a calendar.

January 19th, 2013 10:49pm

The to-do bar is completely neutered, and I can't believe this was done to such a useful and highly used tool.

My grievances that are really disrupting my universe:

* Only today's appointments are shown
* Days on the calendar with appointments are not in bold
* Right-clicking on appointments that are listed does nothing

And now I ask, what does this "to-do" bar do for us at all anymore?

I'm also annoyed that "Message Preview" is an all or nothing affair.... it was useful to get a preview of new messages without reading the whole thing, but I don't need a preview for read messages so it made sense that the old versions of outlook would let you turn on the preview for new messages only....

There are no features in 2013 that compel me to update other than for the sake of staying up to date.  I will try to tolerate these issues for a couple more days, but I am considering sticking with Outlook 2010 and staying there.

Agree with all previous poster regarding the To-Do bar.  This is unworkable.  I depend on seeing all the coming appointments, even (especially) over several days.  Also having multiple months appearing is important.  After using Outlook 2013 for just a few hours this morning I am already frustrated.  I wasn't expecting this limitation to be that significant in work-flow, but it is like having one-hand in a cast!  I find myself glancing over at the To-Do bar and wondering what's wrong.  I can't imagine why Microsoft thought this would be a good idea?  ...what would be "enhanced" by this restriction?  Such a simple thing, I just don't see it as an "advantage".  As several others have indicated, I will be returning to Outlook 2010 until this feature is restored.  I really don't have a choice. -ddw

In terms of work arounds, I'm using Outlook Today (as suggested here: How can I view upcoming appointments (not just today or tomorrow))

Still looking for a viable solution for my Windows 8 laptop though (without Outlook).  So far the best I have is the calendar app synced with the live tile active but that only shows the very next appointment (and only if it's today or tomorrow).

When I upgraded to Office 2013 I selected the option to retain Office 2010 to avoid precisely this kind of issue.  All of Office 2010 remains ... except for Outlook 2010.  So I guess I need to reinstall it.  I can't live with the calendar the way it is.

Another issue which has been around for years is that I have 3 calendars (different clients with Exchange).  Even when I click on a date, I only see appointments for the first calendar.  My first notice for a morning appointment on calendar 2 or3 is that when I come in, there is a popup telling me I missed the appt.  There was a lot of dialog over this feature, but it remains "a known issue" in 2013.

So my question is, did my upgrade change the pst files to a new format?  I.e. if I re-install Outlook 2010, will it work with the current pst files and other settings?  Some of you have taken this step to revert from Outlook 2013 to Outlook 2010.  Did you have any special problems or is it just re-install and start it up?

Thanks,

Terry

February 19th, 2013 2:31am

No the new format really was a Outlook XP - 2003 issue, as it is now ( & then too) is that it'll be backwards compatible to be able open previous formats it will nott convert but that is the reason Outlook is the only APP that cannot run in two versions. I would suggest using "ExtraOutlook"  (version 1.3 latest I think) for when you want to run multiple isntances of Outlook, works on 2010 for sure, didn't have Outlook 2013 installed long enough to test it.

Sigh. I just bought two copies of Office 2013 to get my hands on the latest Outook. Only to find the main productivity tool - the ability to at a glance see what's up the next few days - is GONE?? But HELLO???

I would accept if it was removed as default but I had the ability to turn the feature on but this... MS... You just made this customer very upset. I was actually 50/50 on going the open source route before I bought. Now you just made my mind up. Have fun with my money, it'll be the last you get!

The product manager in charge of accepting a decision to remove existing features completely should be sent home without pay. It's absolutely insanely ignorant and shows no respect to existing customers who expect an upgrade to be... well... an upgrade and not a downgrade.

Shame, Microsoft! Shame!!!!

EDIT: Forgot to say: in Outlook 2010 days with appointments were BOLD which also gave me a quick idea when someone on the phone was asking for a suggestion of days for appointments. Please get this back too!!!

February 27th, 2013 12:45pm

I cannot believe this appointments feature is not here - what a let down again by Microsoft.

With the Windows 8 desktop disaster and Outlook 2013 - business users will be less productive and less knowledgeable about what is happening in the next few days.  Thank goodness for my Samsung SII phone agenda!

I would like Bill Gates to come back to work and fix the Microsoft development team, all his previous work is ruined.

If I would be sarcastic, I would say "Who needed all this useless stuff? Outlook show you now that it's warm and cloudless outside. Go outside and do something useful!" :D

March 4th, 2013 9:11pm

That's not quite accurate - it doesn't display only the "current day", it displays the "selected day".  I definitely preferred the old way, but you can just click on the date that you want to see, which you couldn't before (it would take you into the full calendar in OL 2010).  So toward the end of the day, I just click on tomorrow and the display changes.  Yes, I'd like the "forever view" and maybe that will happen ... but this isn't so bad.

March 4th, 2013 11:08pm

There's probably no need to be sarcastic. Just the mere lenght of what they removed compared to what they added says it all.

Microsoft - if you listen and if you care: I am seriously disappointed by the new Outlook. You removed things which are pretty basic stuff in ANY productivity tool. Why would I go on buying your stuff if it gives me even less than the free stuff? Please think again!

I am also very disappointed that my 10$ plugins for whatever software give me the opportunity to choke myself with ugly colors in the UI and Microsoft has adopted like...uhm... two shades of grey????

The love Microsoft puts into this software now makes me remember how Cinemania was treated just before it was discontinued (due to the revolution of internet and the likes of imdb). Probably Microsoft expects the same development regarding this kind of software. Noone will buy them in the future, so let's stop making them. We stop putting money into development and get all the dough we can while we can.

Well guess what. Next time you won't have my dough. Too bad.

And if I don't need your productivity tool - I don't need Windows either. Because the ONLY thing that has kept me in the Windows environment has actually been Outlook and the Office suite.

Rant rant.

Steve

There are so many things wrong with Outlook 2013, that it's pretty insane.

Shame on Microsoft!

I would love to see the transcript of the Dev meeting where big brained, pocket protected programming geeks sat around and decided "hey, let's change Outlook so people can no longer see their upcoming appointments."  Then slapped each other on the back and went off to their sad little cubicles.

Major fail Microsoft!!!

Count me in as well.  Luckily I didn't uninstall 2010...but I did uninstall 2013 because of this.

I also miss the feature.
March 16th, 2013 11:44am

I feel Outlook was released in a rush... The product is simply not ready for enterprise usage.

And yes, this one (cut of TODO bar) is important for me as well.

Because of this missing, very important feature, I'm also very unhappy with outlook 2013. A new statement from microsoft would be nice.
March 25th, 2013 10:21am

Seriously, did anybody at the Office division actually use Outlook 13 before releasing it? future events don't even show up in Peek view.

I already know what's happening today, I need to see the rest of my week. it's just weird to remove something, weird. Not even an option to change it back.

Oddly enough, out of all the devices I use to see my agenda, Android, iOS and old Windows Mobile 6.0 (runs a business app I can't find a replacement for) - Win Mo is the only one capable of showing an agenda all at once while also showing other info. everything else wants to open up a another app or page - INEFFICENT!

also, I see lots of MS Partners on this thread...

there will be lots of blowback about this if we recommend upgrading to any user that relies on the full calendar preview. so basically this will become one of my qualifying questions to them, "do you use the agenda view of the to-do bar" which I will dumb down because most people on 2007 or 2010 just do because it was a new feature that was on by default when upgrading from 2003 and won't realize it's missing until it's gone.

so when I ask and they say "yes I need to see that", then I can't recommend and I and MS won't get that sale or lots of sales. I encourage all Partners to factor this in when talking to their clients.

March 25th, 2013 6:45pm

The old functionality was fantastic and it is now basically useless.

The two features I used constantly were the fact that it added events until it filled the area, which meant I could usually see about a week or two in advance and that days were bolded when they have an event on the calendar.

This is enterprise software that we pay a lot of money for not some freebie web app, why in the world would MSFT remove such great features?

I too am so incredibly frustrated.  I just loaded 2013 thinking the kinks would be fixed already.  Alas, what an absolute waste of a non-profits $$.  The To-Do Calendar is vital.

March 26th, 2013 9:36pm

Wow!  I was hoping to find a solution.  Instead I find this nonsense.

I would love to meet the idiot who only implemented a single days worth of appt/event viewing.  I would love to dig into his/her brain and see what the hell they were thinking.

Not only is a single days worth unacceptable but to have no visual notification on the calendar itself as to what days have something?  RIDICULOUS!!!!

... MS, if you're tallying, here's another vote to restore this feature in an update.

A 'partial' workaround, or more appropriately lame-around, is to add the calendar matrix into the ToDo bar and highlight the desired date (i.e. tomorrow).  You need to do this every time for each desired day and it will obviously only show the highlighted date.

Count me in as upset.  Just discovered this problem and nearly want my money back!  I need multiple calendars in the to do bar and I need multiple days in the meeting list, that I can edit locally.  Don't think for me and take away existing features.  Want to create some default view, that's fine, but leave me the option.

Thanks for posting your feedback.  The To-Do-Bar functionality was changed in Outlook 2013 to use the new Peek pinning feature.  We have recieved lots of other feedback to add next day meetings to the Calendar Peek.  Hopefully this functionality can be added in a future update.

This is not an answer, or rather it answers a different question.  The question is: why was this critical feature not included in Outlook 2013?  You have only mentioned another way in which it still doesn't work.

Nobody asked, and I suspect nobody really cares, what the details are of the development process or how the underlying code works. Saying that critical functionality was removed because there are new features that - to the user - are unrelated doesn't make any sense.

Users: "Say, I just bought this car from you, and it doesn't have any seatbelts!  I need seatbelts!  Every car I've bought in the past had seatbelts; why doesn't this latest model have them?"

MS: "We removed the seatbelts when we upgraded the transmission. Now you can shift more easily!"

Users: "...?"

Spot on analogy klugerama!

Microsoft, has your micro brain gone soft?  The appointments and the extended calendar are ESSENTIAL features for those of us who use MS Office for their work so we can effectively manage our time and weekly and/or monthly programme.  Without it we are blind and people will vote with their wallets if the product doesn't offer the features that they want and need.  Outlook 2013 is now just an email client, and there's plenty of those that are free and have more useful tools and features.  To offer Outlook 2013 as a business tool in those circumstances amounts to false and misleading conduct.  Fix it Microsoft or pay the price of irrelevancy.  The clock is ticking ...

Checked and it seems that's one of the limitations of the to-do bar Calendar. Only shows today's appointments.

Almost each an every calendar-app I know alows a user to choose, what he wants to see. Daily, weekly, monthly overviews, whole year, appointments of 1 to n days in advance, as table, list or calendar-view.

Nice to be able to peek a day and see the appointments of that day. Why not let the user choose, how many days in advance he wants the list of coming appointments to be filled with - starting with the day he peeks? And why not again highlight the days, on which there are appointments set?

I'm very sad with these "new features"! Bring me back the appointmentlist at least the way Outlook 2010 was able to Show.

Even better it would be, if i can choose any calendar, from whch this gadget gets it's informations - as I use icloud aswell it was sad in 2010 aswell, that only appointments of the local calendar find their way in this view!

Hope to see an update very soon - even if my hopes keep little as this thread already startet in 2012...

Cheers,

Matthias

You can see the appointments for any other day by clicking that day in the To-Do Bar calendar, but it still shows only one day at a time.
April 8th, 2013 11:21pm

Installed Office 2013 as a demo for a customer (and for myself). After we both saw the lack of features in the ToDo bar (only one month shown, appointments for one day only, appointments in calendar not in bold text) we both decided to revert to 2010. I see no reason to remove these features. At the very least, there should be options for the user to enable them (ie, "Outlook 2010 ToDo Bar compatibility").

Also, the background in the message window does not pick up the Windows background color setting - it remains white. This should be a user definable setting - or at the very least, it should be the same as it always was in the past.

I just want to add my disgust with the removal of this feature!! This could be a deal breaker for my company moving to Office 365!! Microsoft..again not thinking about the users of their product!!!
April 9th, 2013 4:37pm

I am perplexed as to what is going on with Microsoft. We are Gold partners of a dozen years and have worked with Office form its first version. I never saw anything like this. I know they plan features years ahead of release. Were we supposed to be in 2013 living in some ipad smartphone world in the NOW ONLY but are behind schedule? It was very stupid to remove this very needed feature. 2013 upgrade is a perverse "get us to the cloud" maintenance release.

For anyone that is stuck using Outlook 2013, there is a semi decent third party add-in that gives us more than what Microsoft did.

http://outlook2013addin.codeplex.com/

I installed it.  It's nowhere near the capabilities of the To-Do bar in Outlook 2010, but at least it's something.

I am sorely disappointed that Microsoft removed such an incredibly useful feature.  I am in Outlook all day long and any steps that can save me 30 seconds of having to click to a different screen and back again, adds up very fast.  Add me to the list of people that feel cheated from their money by the removal of a feature that should have been kept in.

What, you mean you dislike having to click another 40-50 times per day to check your schedule? Just remember the mantra - "Less is more...".  All ux must be dumbed down so that monkeys and cats are able to use it.  Eventually we'll be doing all our work on a screen the size of a postage stamp with only one button.

Me too.  This is totally ridiculous.  Not all of us work on a one-day-at-a-time basis.  I have deadlines that are days, weeks or months away and I like to keep them in view, as well as the bold dates which warn me that something's coming up to interrupt that work - even if it's 2 months away.  Thanks to this idiotic new design I just double booked myself for the 13th September.  BRING BACK A PROPER USEFUL CALENDAR.

If the Outlook team really needs to see how this feature should work, all they need to do is go down the hall and ask how the lowly Windows Essentials team was able to accomplish this brilliantly in WLM. Multiple calendars in To-do bar? Yep. Even read-only subscribed iCal calendars? Yep. Outlook has grown to feel like a really crippled, unessential, really bad "utility".... the only reason it even exists is because of Exchange Server. The team needs to be fired. Bring in the WLM guys, hire people from Google's GMail team, etc. Something has to be done.
