Outlook 2013 RTM not syncing all calendar events to outlook.com

Goal: copy existing Outlook calendar to outlook.com in order to sync to mobile devices via EAS to outlook.com. What I did: created a new outlook.com account to make sure I didn't have any left-over hotmail connector issues. Installed Office 2013 RTM. Added outlook.com account (it automactically created it as EAS account). Copied calendar events from pst calendar to outlook.com account calendar (list view; select all; ctrl-drag to outlook.com calendar). Everything looks good locally. All calendar events copied locally to ost. After F9, no complaints. Sync errors folders are empty. Wait overnight. Still no events in web outlook.com calendar. Then I add new event in Outlook calendar; sure enough it shows up on web. Edit event on web; sure enough it shows up correctly in Outlook. So sync is working, just not for all those events I copied. EAS syncing to outlook.com just isn't working correctly. EAS to outlook.com is touted as better replacement for hotmail connector, but doesn't work as well. Read on this forum about contacts not syncing unless you edit each one. Sounds siimilar. Even a way to "force a new sync" would probably fix my issue, but can't find it. Any suggestions?

I'm about to give up on EAS and find another sync tool to get my Outlook calendar into mobile device and by-pass outlook.com.

January 9th, 2013 6:06pm

I have tested before, we can see the calendar item though hotmail website if we move only one from PST/OST date file to EAS profile. But it is not working if we move several/all items to EAS profile even wait a long time.

This problem does not exist in Outlook 2010 with Hotmail Connector.

So is there anyway to "force" a full sync? If not, this is a really bad bug in Outlook 2013 EAS. If you can't trust the EAS to sync with Microsoft's own servers, then this a real problem.

So far, there is no solution to this problem.

I am trying to involve someone familiar with this topic to further look at this issue.

Thanks, Nitish. However, I read the KB and it only mentioned this problem in the "more information" section and then it was referring to copying one occurence of a recurring appointment. In my case, even single appointments weren't synchronized with the oultook.com calendar. I believe there should be a KB with this calendar problem and not buried in a "more information" section of a KB talking about copying email messages.

Also, how do I track progress on this problem? In desperation I'm using a third-party outlook-to-phone sync program, but I'd rather be using outlook.com. But I don't see how to keep track of when this problem is fixed.

Thanks, Martin

I agree with mdy4.  I am having the same problem.  It is very disturbing to have the mistaken belief that calendar events are syncing between Outlook 2013 and Outlook.com only to find that some, but not all, of the events are syncing.  It makes syncing useless, especially when there are no error messages to tell you it is not working properly.

I suggest this workaround while Microsoft fixes the issue. In the Outlook calendar on your PC, select a view that shows all the events you have. Then select all of them (CTRL+E), right-click and Categorize. Assign all the events a new category called "dummy". Wait until Outlook syncs the changes to outlook.com (look at the bottom line on your screen). Then repeat the process, deleting the "dummy" category from all the events. This forces a complete sync of the calendar. It worked for me: in less than a couple of minutes, all of my 1000 events appeared in outlook.com. I hope this solution is useful.

I'm using Outlook 2010 with the Outlook Hotmail Connector, and I have this same problem. Only a very few of my calendar events are synching to Outlook.com. Some observations:

(1) Someone said this problem does not occur with Outlook 2010 and the Outlook Hotmail Connector - this is incorrect.

(2) The linked Knowledgebase article does not accurately describe the problem I'm seeing. The events synched in my case are the recurring appointments. ONLY the recurring ones. The single appointments are not synched. The Knowledgebase article describes a problem with recurring appointments.

Edit: The workaround of adding and removing a category (which I've also seen suggested elsewhere) worked for me. I thought at first that it didn't, but it just took a while for everything to upload. The category colors are missing, but at least the appointments are there.

I'm glad there's a workaround, but this is a bad bug. I wish Microsoft would pay attention to this and fix it. I hope all my appointments are uploaded, but I can't be sure - it's hard to check. I have a lot of appointments.

Correction: This is far from fixed. It synched that once, and never since. I almost always get a synch error after making changes (this time Error Code 0x8004A164). When I try synching again there are no error, but there is also nothing synched.

I could not get this method to work for me (there are over 7K items in the calendar).

I did find a temporary work-around for now:

1. In Outlook, click File/Save Calendar.

2. Click More Options - Set Date Range as Next 30 days, Detail as "Full Detail" and if needed, go into Advanced and select the additional options.

3. This will save your file as an iCal (iCalendar Format).

4. Sign into Outlook.com through your browser and select Calendar.

5. Use the Import button to import the iCal file into your account. Do not allow duplicates.

This will bring your two calendars in sync for the moment until this is resolved.

I'm glad to see this thread - if only to know that I'm not stupid and others are experiencing the same problems as me.  I'm tearing my hair out trying to get EAS to sync outlook.com calendar and two devices with Office 2013.  It occasionally works, often doesn't; to get most items into new calendars I had to import them.  But changes to one device often don't show up on another - but there's no way of knowing what works and what won't, without manually checking. Really inadequate. Is there no solution?  I'm thinking of giving up and syncing using a gmail calendar and third party software.

This problem has been here for over a year. Hey, Microsoft? Are you ever going to fix it? It's stuff like this that pushes people away from Outlook toward Google... (Just saying.)
February 23rd, 2014 2:15pm

I met the same problem. If I copy events from other calendar to the outlook.com calendar, it looks good locally, but they cannot be synchronized to outlook.com web. If I add a new event to outlook.com calendar, it works well. I also use the Google  Calendar Sync to synchronize the outlook.com calendar and Google Calendar. From outlook.com to Google, it works well.  From Google to outlook.com, it looks good locally, but cannot show up in the outlook.com.  I think it is the same problem as above. Another note, if I only delete some events in the Google calendar, they can also be deleted in outlook.com web. Hope MS can fix this problem quickly.

This whole thing is a complete nightmare!

Although I'm moderately PC literate I'm not about to start altering Registry files (as promoted by one Microsoft 'expert') as I don't really have that much confidence, nor anything else that involves folders, files, .pst's, EAS or anything else. It's just technocratic Bull***t.

Instead of having 'technical experts' answering these complaints, try explaining your solutions to a guy off the street and have him/her post the answers then we might be able to understand what the h*ll you are talking about.

As a simple 'user' I don't expect to have to start grubbing round under the bonnet of Outlook 2013/Outlook.com to synchronise my PC calendar with my Windows phone so I can update a simple diary event from either.

And I have been on numerous MS forums where this is turning out to be a major problem for everyone!

It is simply ridiculous when Apple, with all its limitations, is turning out to be the preferred business tool despite most peoples need for MS Office. If you can't get to an appointment there is no need for the sophistication of MS Office anyway!

SORT IT OUT MICROSOFT.........NO APOLOGIES FOR SHOUTING COS' YOU AIN'T LISTENING.

Get this...........I want to be able to enter my hotmail address, which I have had for years, into Outlook 2013, Outlook.com and my Nokia Lumia 925 Windows phone and see the same calendar data on all of them. That's it, that's as much as I want to do.

Is that so much to ask being that I spent 1,000 on a Windows 8.1 laptop, 300 on a Windows phone, and subscribe to MS Office every month. Had I spent the same amount with Apple, everything would have worked seamlessly with an email address, yes even a Microsoft hotmail address, and the only thing I would have had to worry about is an Office application, which isn't enough.

I am just about to send my Windows phone back in exchange for an Apple and the next time I need a laptop it will be an Apple.

And whilst I'm an individual user, this is where the rot starts, there are lots of us individual users, and we all grow up to be corporate users.

GET IT FIXED!!!!

Yours unfaithfully,

Mr. Effing Fuming Mad

PS........The 'expert' is Diane Poremsky "A Microsoft Outlook Most Valuable Professional (MVP) since 1999" and published author who talks as much unintelligible c*ap as you people do.

This should be a simple process, but I have spent 2 days trawling round forums and third party software sites for solutions, try that the next time you want your car fixed when you're in the middle of nowhere!

I am also having a problem.  I thought everything was working fine, and then I discovered that calendar items with categories (1/3 of my calendar items), were not syncing from Outlook 2013 to Outlook.com.

This is a catastrophic failure.  I am an IT professional (MCSE), and now I have to recommend against using MS Office and Outlook AT ALL.  Completely useless in the cloud based reality of today.

Fix it fast Microsoft, or I am switching to Google permanently for myself and my many hundreds of clients.

Hey, Microsoft lurkers! This problem has been around for a long time. Fixing it would be nice. Or at least you could acknowledge it and tell all of us trying to use Outlook the app and Outlook.com the service via EAS to just give up on the Outlook products and migrate to Google Calendar.

It sure seems like syncing calendar events is a fundamental feature of calendars that claim to sync. I just copied another 162 events to my Outlook calendar that is connected via EAS to my Outlook.com calendar. The events haven't synced anywhere else after a week. I've tired all kinds of different ways to "touch" the locally displayed events to see if I could get them to propagate. No Joy. I'd export them to an iCal file and mount the iCal file but Outlook 2013/Of365HP has no way to remove a file-mounted iCal.

Microsoft spends a lot of time wondering why people don't love them or their products anymore. It's because so many of them just don't work all that well.

February 28th, 2014 2:50pm

FWIW, one rather ugly workaround to this is to use Outlook VBA to re-create new items to replace the items that aren't syncing. This depends on some knowledge of which ones these are since it isn't easy to tell from looking on the machine that created the items in the first place. In my case, It was a baseball schedule I imported into a local .PST calendar from .CSV and then copied into my default calendar, which is the Outlook.com/EAS calendar. So I knew a way to find all the problem entries. Other ways might involve, say, exporting the calendar from a machine with the entries and one without and diff'ing the two lists.

At any rate, my code(usual disclaimers that YMMV):

Public Sub Copy2014Rox()

    Dim oAppt As Outlook.AppointmentItem, oApptsToCopy() As AppointmentItem, _
        x As Long, oNewAppt As AppointmentItem

    ' find all the releveant appointments
    For Each oAppt In GetNamespace("MAPI").GetDefaultFolder(olFolderCalendar).Items
        If InStr(oAppt.Categories, "Colorado Rockies") > 0 And oAppt.Start > CDate("12/31/2013") Then
            On Error GoTo ArrUninitialized
            ReDim Preserve oApptsToCopy(UBound(oApptsToCopy) + 1)
            On Error GoTo 0
            Set oApptsToCopy(UBound(oApptsToCopy)) = oAppt
        End If
    Next

    ' now copy them
    For x = 0 To UBound(oApptsToCopy)

        Set oAppt = oApptsToCopy(x)

        Set oNewAppt = CreateItem(olAppointmentItem)

        With oNewAppt
            .Subject = oAppt.Subject
            .Location = oAppt.Location
            .Start = oAppt.Start
            .End = oAppt.End
            .Body = oAppt.Body
            .Categories = oAppt.Categories
            .BusyStatus = oAppt.BusyStatus
            .ReminderMinutesBeforeStart = oAppt.ReminderMinutesBeforeStart
            .ReminderSet = oAppt.ReminderSet

            .Save

        End With

        ' mark the unsynced ones so we can find them and delete them
        oAppt.Subject = "z" & oAppt.Subject
        oAppt.Save

    Next x

    Exit Sub

ArrUninitialized:

    ReDim oApptsToCopy(0)
    Resume Next

End Sub

I was having this same problem, and a very big problem it is.  I suggested, as an IT professional, to use this office product because it would meet the needs of my customer, only to find out how broken it was.

I used this work around (THANK YOU!) which saved me some, however, the syncing is just such hit and miss it is beyond horrible.

Microsoft needs to fix this.

I had it sort of syncing with one outlook, until I did this work around, now it is sort of syncing with that outlook, but now wont sort with the first one at all.

Instead of having my client support her employees calendar from her outlook easily, I have to have her log into Outlook web site mail just to update the calendar, then I have to have her make sure with her employee that they are updated.

This is NOT acceptable.  They paid a lot of money for Office and for a Microsoft Exchange Server email to not have the calendar syncing properly is beyond disappointing.  The fact it has been going on this long without a fix, is even more atrocious.

I have always talked my customers into using legal proper Microsoft (and other) products.  However, after this how can I suggest this huge expense on a product that does not work as it should.

Glad to find this post describing my exact problem and I am still trying some of the workarounds in the replies later so this is primarily a complain. I am using outlook and windows phone so would like to use outlook.com to sync these two, only to find outlook cannot even sync with outlook.com properly. With a 3rd-party extension I used to sync outlook to Google calendar seamlessly with no fuss, it is unbelievable that outlook cannot sync with outlook.com despite they bear the same name? Such a major issue in one of the most important products still exists after more than one year since reported. Really makes me wonder how things are done inside Microsoft.
May 4th, 2014 10:43pm

I have exactly the same issue.  I have tried contacting M$ Support online but have been passed between FOUR technicians, who haver all claimed it is not their department and redirected me to the next one!  Eventually I was directed to Outlook 2013 support but they have nor had any technicians free for 2 hours!

I am trying the Categories solution and hopefully it will work.  I suspect it will need redoing periodically to make up for sync errors.

Pathetic M$ - no wonder you are losing business!

Okay now we have end of July 2014 and the problem is still not fixed. Even setting up the heartbeat to 1 min like suggested from Microsoft is not solving the issue at all: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2781261

I am working in the Client Management area as a 3rd level engineer for Microsoft based client products in a very huge global company. If I would handle such kind of critical problems where our business customers are affected in that way following would happen: It would have been escalated to a level where our CIO would move directly into my Office and making me fire like hell to fix the issue as fast as possible or provide me as alternative searching for another job.

Synchronizing to the cloud is a core functionality, which is broken in Outlook 2013 and making using these services not really trustful. That nothing has happened over more than one year is even worse.

To be honest I am normally somebody who really likes using and working with Microsoft products (you call it digital ecosystem) but if this will not change in the next months I have to think using an Outlook alternative.

July 22nd, 2014 7:50pm

Gabriel -

If you read the postings carefully, the issue has nothing to do with dragging items from one calendar to another. The issue has to do with synchronization of calendar items from Outlook 2013 to Outlook.com.

Ok - just to add to the general weirdness of all of this -

I created an Excel spreadsheet of all of my kids basketball games (approx. 30 entries) that stretch from the middle of November 2014 through February of 2015. I imported them into my Outlook 2013 calendar on my home laptop. They all appear just fine. I open Outlook.com in a browser. I see all of the games up until the end of November - approximately 90 days out from today.  So, a whole lot of games have gone missing.

So this is where the weirdness comes in - all of the calendar items appear on my Outlook 2013 calendar on my office computer. So the data is out in the cloud somewhere - it has been replicated from home to office Outlook 2013 instances - but is NOT showing up in Outlook.com.

This kind of sucks on many different levels, but there you go. Can't see the calendar on my spiffy Windows phone. Can someone at microsoft PLEASE look at this? This thread goes back well over a year - this is not a new problem. FIX IT.

August 13th, 2014 2:35pm

I'm having the same issue - it is now August 2014. Really unforgivable that such a terrible bug has been allowed to persist for this long. I can see all of the millions of entries on Outlook 2013 - they stop syncing to Outlook.com at some random date 2 months from now. Recurrent events seem to work just fine - like Birthdays. Please get to work on this. It's obviously been thrown into the 'done' pile when it clearly hasn't been resolved. Want people to buy Windows Phones? Get this simple stuff sorted.

Same issue for me. August 30th now.  Some calendar appts, when added to Outlook 2013 are synced immediately to Live. Others - never sync. And, then because they are not on Live, are not showing on my phone (Windows HTC). SO frustrating, because I have missed appointments, because they are not showing on my phone. I have tried the category option, with no luck. Never syncs!  I have printed out my Outlook calendar and have uninstalled Outlook and reinstalled. Then, had to re-enter items that are not syncing from Live.  Please fix this Microsoft.
August 30th, 2014 5:47pm

It's embarrassing that after over a year of dealing with this they still haven't 1. aknowledged the issue 2. done anything about it.

It's time to start looking for outlook/windows substitutes.

Does anyone have any suggestions whether it's with Mac, google, or any other type of software available that would accept an import of all my information from outlook and provide sync capabilities.

Absolutely so sick of this. I use to run my life (and pick my phones) entirely off calendar on my phone. Now going on well over a year of zero sync and am absolutely over it. Time to move on.

Experiencing the same issue.

1. Create calendar on outlook.com

2. Populate calendar with weekly recurring events from Outlook 2013

3. Most events sync back to outlook.com, but 3 of the 4 events on Wednesdays do no sync.

This is rather disappointing.  A critical piece of functionality is unreliable!

September 17th, 2014 4:35am

Really? Still no progress on this?!?  Mine seems worse than described. 3/4 of events syncing would be an improvement. I am only getting about 50%. Also, the categorize and then de-categorize had no effect, and a lot of the imported events had improper dates or times.  I don't want to go to Google, but if this doesn't get fixed soon I will have no other choice.  The fact that there has been so little progress in a year does not give me much hope.

I seem to have found a workaround.  Everything seems to sync correctly if the Outlook.com calendar is the 1st calendar in your list of calendars.  Right click on the Outlook.com calendar and select move up until it is at the top of the list.
September 28th, 2014 4:41am

My situation is similar.  However, when I add new appointments to Outlook, they mostly don't propagate to O.com.

When I make changes to existing Outlook appointments (that do not show in O.com), there is no propagation to O.com.

But, when I add new appointments to O.com (via browser), they DO propagate down to Outlook.

So, the bug appears to be that the sync agent isn't too bright.  It seems to not look (on Outlook) for anything before the date/time of the sync.  At least it looks that way.

Summary:  For calendar events CREATED via browser on outlook.com, syncing DOWN to Outlook appears to work.
For events created or modified on Outlook, there is no sync to Outlook.com.

I'm running Outlook 365 on a latest updated Windows 8.1 machine.  I've switched local Outlook Calendar to point to the EAS outlook.com calendar...in theory, that's the one that appears when I look in the browser...but sync is one way (outlook.com to outlook) only.

NOTE:  I tried the "add a dummy category" to all the events in Outlook, no effect.  The local (Outlook) calendar entries do NOT sync to outlook.com on the web.

<added later>

Root Problem & Solution (for my case, anyway).  IF you COPY entries from your existing Outlook calendar to your Outlook.com THEN they will NOT SYNC.

IF you MOVE entries from your Outlook calendar to your Outlook.com calendar, they WILL SYNC!

IF you make new ones in your Outlook.com calendar (either online via browser, or in Outlook) they will SYNC.

Note that MOVE works (from the list view).  COPY LOOKS like it works, but sync will not work.  This isn't a bug, it is a stupid design decision, as far as I can tell.

September 28th, 2014 5:52pm

This answer is GREAT. If you follow the link, it will tell you that COPYING entries from Outlook to Outlook.com calendars APPEARS to work, but the entries are STATIC and do not SYNC.

BUT

If you MOVE the entries from the Outlook Calendar to the Outlook.COM calendar, they will sync.

Even if you make changes to COPYed items in the Outlook.com calendar, they will NOT SYNC.

This is horrible design, but it looks like they wanted to prevent duplicate entries or something.  NO good designer would make the end result of a copy or move different...IMHO

At least I can now move on with some confidence that my Outlook.com calendar syncs with the PC based Outlook calendar that I live by.

Hello,

Can you please tell if there is a solution for this issue?

I also have Outlook 2013 and Live account and if Calendar items are created in Outlook some of them still not sync with Live account.

Thank you.

Have anyone tried to open official support case?

Have OEM version so cannot log cases to MS. Can anyone else submit pls?

Meanwhile until this is fixed as an interim solution migrated from Live Calendar to iCloud.

It seems Apple's connector though having a few other issues works much smoother with Outlook comparing to MS own Live service.

Well, it is now 2015 and this is happening to me as well. I upgraded to Office 365 and found out the hard way that appointments were not syncing. I never had this problem with Outlook 2010 and Outlook connector.

I have no choice but to dump outlook and pay for one of the online scheduling systems. No way I'm going to keep paying for Office 365. Since I won't need outlook I can use one of the free office suites.

Would have been nice to have something that works directly from Microsoft but no answer in two years to this problem does not give me confidence.

31.03.2015 - STILL NOTHING ?!?

Editing the Registry with the heartbeat setting did work for my client some months ago.

Now after some Updates it's back to not syncing properly .

It's a shame.

Add me to the list of dissatisfied customers.

Once I upgraded to Office 2015, the Outlook 2013 won't sync to my phone using outlook.com  Frustration doesn't come close to describing my feelings.

I am frustrated that you can't use HTML in the calendars.  i need to view hyperlinks on some dates in my calendar to find addresses, etc to a location, plus other reasons I generally need to place a hyperlink in my calendar to access more information on my phone when I am away from my computer.

It is now 2015 and looks like the same problem is still here.

I have Outlook 2010 linked to corporate Exchange server (primary email and calendar source), but I have added another account in Outlook client also (outlook.com Live account-id). Now, syncing works just fine and I can see the Outlook.com calendar entries in Outlook2010 Windows client app also (appointment entries created directly into this web calendard via web browser or Mobile phone using this Outlook.com/Live account).

Also, if I use Outlook2010 Windows client to create a new appointment in Outlook.com calendar it works just fine (entry is seen in web or in mobile phone). The key here was that I CREATE a new entry.

However, if I try to copy (copy-paste) or move (drag-n-drop) an appointment from my main Outlook2010 Windows client Exhange calendard to this Outlook.com, copied entries are seen in Outlook2010 Windows client but entries are never synced to Microsoft Outlook.com servers. Web browser or mobile phone never sees these MOVED or COPIED entries. Almost like copied/moved entry is static to the Outlook2010 Windows client app.

I can't believe this is a design decision because what's the point of copying appointment entries to Outlook.com calendar if it is not synced to Microsoft's cloud?

Everything works fine if I simply create new entries to Outlook.com calendar using Outlook2010 Win app client, but it would be a lot easier to just copy items from Exchange calendar to Outlook.com shared calendar.

Any workarounds?  This thread mentioned dummy categories. This didn't seem to do the trick for me or somehow I don't understand the trick.

Microsoft. Any news about solutions?
