Outlook 2013 Meeting Acceptance Stuck in Outbox

Hi

We are having an increasing problem with meeting requests that originate external to our organisation. When the internal recipient responds (either accepts or declines the invitation) the response gets stuck in their Outbox.

They receive the following message:

Remote Server returned '554 5.6.0 STOREDRV.Submit.Exception:TextConvertersException; Failed to process message due to a permanent exception with message data truncated TextConvertersException: data truncated'

The user is able to open the meeting response in the Outbox (double-click the message) and click Send and the response will then go normally.

We are using Outlook 2013 SP1 with Exchange 2013 SP1 CU9

Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks

Sean

Hi Sean,

Do you get the NDR message if we accept the meeting request from within OWA?

Based on my research, this was a transient error that occurred at server level. The error is referring to a communication error that means that at the server level the content of the email couldnt be read. 'Failed to process message due to a permanent exception with message data truncated' this is referring to the fact that the information/data that arrived to the server level was truncated and this has led actually to the NDR being generated.

However, at Outlook client side, we can try the following method:

1. Install the latest update installed for both Outlook 2013 and Exchange server. I've noticed a similar issue fixed by latest updates.

2. Disable anti-virus software integration in Outlook. I've noticed a same issue caused by the Eset Plugins in Outlook and Symantec DLP 10.5/11.1 Outlook Addin.

Hope this helps.

Hi Steve

Many thanks for your response. I checked OWA this morning and we do not receive the NDR when we accept an external meeting request this way.

I am currently looking at your other two suggestions, especially the Outlook Add-in as we do have a couple for email classification and archival. We do not use any Anti-Virus add-ins though.

Will report back what I find shortly.

Thanks

Update

Both Outlook and Exchange are running the latest patches and I have tried disabling add-ins, and we still have the same problem.

Any other ideas??

Thanks

Thank you for the update, Sean.

Do you have any signature added while sending the meeting response? Based on my research, signature may cause such an issue. Please try testing again without adding an Outlook signature.

In addition, we can also open Outlook in safe mode to see if this issue persists. To do this, press Windows key + R to open the Run command, type outlook /safe and press Enter.

Hi Steve

Thanks for your additional suggestions. Sending the meeting response without any signature make no difference - we still get the NDR.

But sending the response from Safe mode does work.

Thank you for the update, Sean. When we start Outlook in safe mode, several temporary changes occur in Outlook. So, this issue was temporarily fixed due to one of these temporary changes. Among these changes, COM add-ins are the most common causes, so I want to ask you to double-check if you have tried disabled all add-ins when testing the issue. We can also try disabling the add-ins via registry editor to see the result. For detailed steps, please refer to the 'What to do if Outlook does not crash when you start it in safe mode' portion in the following KB article:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2934538

If it still doesn't help, please follow the steps described in the next section (numbered with '3') in the above KB article to rename the \outlook registry part to \outlook-1.

Please let me know the result.

Morning Steve

You are spot on.

I disabled all of the add-ins again and the problem went away. I then went through the process of enabling each add-in one-by-one until the problem reappeared. Therefore identifying the culprit.

It turns out to be an add-in that we all need to use to classify our outgoing email. The version we are using does not like to work with Outlook 2013 and Exchange 2013 so I went back to the vendor and was able to get an updated version which has solved the issue.

Many thanks for time
