Outlook 2013 Keeps Crashing immediately after starting even when using Outlook.exe /SAFE mode.

Outlook 2013 Keeps crashing immediately upon startup.  Word, Excel and PowerPoint are fine.

Stuff I tried already:

1) Office Quick Repair

2) Office Full Repair

3) New Outlook Profile

4) Disabled all Add-Ins

5) Outlook /Safe mode

6) Used Outlook diagnostic and it couldn't fix Outlook from Crashing either. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2934538/en-us?wa=wsignin1.0

I checked the latest installed Windows updates (Under Control Panel, Windows Updates, Installed Updates and sorted them by installation date) and found this Hotfix KB3006137 was recently installed so I simply REMOVED it and then restarted the computer.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3006137

I am not sure if it is conincidence or not but right after the removal ad restart the Outlook 2013 client started to work again!

We were using local installed Outlook 2013 client connected to Exchange Office 365 service.

Please try to remove and let me know if this works for you too.  Thank you.

Hi David,

Thanks for sharing the information. For this specific KB, I haven't received any other reports of the same issue, we'll keep tracking and let you know for any updates.

funkypepsi,

Since safe mode works for you, I think your situation should be different. If Office applications keep crashing, but work well in safe mode, it usually indicates that some third party add-ins are interfering with Office. Please try the following steps to troubleshoot the add-ins in Outlook:

  • Go to FILE>Options>Add-Ins
  • Click "Go" button in the "Manage: Com-in Add"
  • Clear all the checkbox to disable all add-ins.
  • Restart Outlook, then add one back each time to the list of Add-In and check result. Repeat the procedure above. Once the issue reappears again, we can determine which add-in causes this problem and then disable it.

Hope it helps.

Dear Ethan Hua,

You're way off in your response.  Please re-read my original message of the troubleshooting items I tried.  You did not see ITEM # 5 where I wrote OUTLOOK /SAFE MODE DOES NOT WORK!   Please also see item #6 where I refer to using to using the Outlook diagnostic tool unsuccessfully.  The only fix was to remove the KB HOTFIX I LISTED ABOVE!

I've seen that one (the Euro update) blamed for a lot of problems, not just with Outlook.

Diane,

THANK YOU for confirming my approach!  I thought I was losing my mind after 8 plus hours of troubleshooting a clilent Outlookk 2013 issue that had nothing to do with Outlook itself!!!

When everything else failed including the IT Pro Outlook diagnostic tool then I starting removing the most recent Windows updates especially the one that said HOTFIX, restarted and then tested Oulook each timie until I could determine that specific KB I listed was the cause.

Now is Microsoft going to compensate me for my solution because as an IT Consultant my client is unwilling to pay for 8 hours of troubleshooting as a new computer cost much less to purchase and setup?  LOL :->

Thank you once again.

I had problems late last week and tried the usual suspects plus 3 reboots (to install all of the waiting updates) then threw in the towel and used system restore. While it doesn't narrow down which update was bad, I only wasted about 3 hours.
