Outlook 2013 Inbox startup email focus

Dears,

recently upgraded to 2013 Office and the issue I'm having among the others I've read about here in Outlook 2013 is:

When Outlook starts and there are new emails arriving, the selection is automatically switched to the last received email in Inbox and therefore it is (as set with my settings) automatically marked as read in some seconds. I don't remember it was happening with 2010 and think that selection was saved from last session on the last email read, not on new ones. I already missed some emails (as they were read) and this is bugging me. Is there an existing way to fix it?

Hi,

When we launch Outlook, by default, the selection is located here:

How did you set it automatically switch to the last received email?

Please check the settings here:

Click on the VIEW tab from the ribbon, click Reading Pane and select Options from the drop-down list. Untick both Mark items as read when viewed in the Reading Pane and Mark items as read when selection changes options, and then test the issue again.

If the issue persists in this situation, please temporarily turn off your security program to check the result.

Also, run Outlook in safe mode (outlook.exe /safe) to verify if its caused by suspicious add-ins.

Thanks.

Dears,

this does not solve my issue. I know where to set the time for the email to be marked as read. My query is not about it, I want to leave this option as it is set now (for marking as read after some seconds of reading).

I'm having an issue with the following. When you're already in Outlook, if you will select an email in any folder, then switch to another folder and then go back - your selection would still be that email you selected couple of jumps back. And this is correct. But when you're only launching Outlook, the focus in Inbox is automatically shifted to the last received Email (even if it is in background) and the email is read after some seconds. Thus, if there was only one email I receive in Inbox, I will probably not notice it when Outlook is started, because it will be read in some seconds.

I state this was never happening in 2010, the selection focus of inbox at startup was at the last email read, not at the latest email received. This is a bug.

Ok, I guess I don't read your comment carefully. I did not switch anything to do this. I just tried doing what you recommended and it didn't work. Still if I select an email in Inbox (not the last one received), then close outlook and restart it - the last email received is selected, not the one that selection was focused on before I closed it.

You can't reproduce it in your version?

Hi,

Thank you for your update.

Sorry, but I can't reproduce this issue in my environment. Just as I mentioned above, when I select any email in any folder, then I restart my Outlook 2013, it will locate at where I mentioned above.

Have you tried restart Outlook in safe mode and with all security programs closed?

Press Windows key + R to open the Run box, type "outlook.exe /safe" and press Enter.

Please feel free to let me know the result.

Thanks.

Dear Steve,

I disabled NOD antivirus and launched Outlook in safe mode like you asked. I selected an email in Inbox in the middle of the list, closed Outlook and again launched it in safe mode. I selected Inbox and the focus was on the last email arrived, so I still have the same thing.
