Outlook 2013 - Calendar issues: Suggestions cannot be provided because free/busy data could not be retrieved
I noticed recently that I cannot see anymore free/busy information for my own organization colleagues.
I'm using Outlook 2013 (latest updates) upon Exchange 2010 (SP ?).
The suggestion DO work on my account using OWA.
Other users w/Outlook 2010 have no problems.
I tried to run "outlook /cleanfreebusy" but that switch isn't supported anymore in outlook 2013.
Anyone can help ?
Thanks

Hi,
I tried to switch my profile to online mode and to reun "outlook.exe /cleanfreebusy", but I got :
An Outlook was really in Online mode (see next post).
Have you an idea of what is wrong ?
I would like to try that before recreating the profile.
Thanks

Try Outlook /cleanfreebusy in Command line .
Also could you please let me know if your Default File Store is Exhange or Local PST file ?
Let meknow the result of Command run .
October 28th, 2013 11:00am
Hi
The default file store is my local .ost file (Exchange local cache file).
I'll let you know about the command line but I thought the Start/run menu as the same.
October 28th, 2013 2:04pm
Hi (again),
I tried the command line option but it produced exactly the same message box.
See picture.
Any other idea ?
October 28th, 2013 3:08pm
Please type the Command in Start - Run Not in Command Prompt navigating to Path .
Also Try Outlook /Cleanreminders and let me know the result .
SO , What i understand you have Created a PST which points to your local Hardisk where it stores the Data .Correct ?
If that is the Case please make your Exchange store as default and test the issue .
October 29th, 2013 4:25am
Hi,
I already tried from Command in Start / Run : see above. Same result.
As for your PST question. No that's not the situation. I'm working normally in Exchange cached mode via a local .ost file. No PST at all involved. I only have PSTs for monthly archives.
Exchange .ost file IS the default store. All tests above have been done like this.
October 29th, 2013 9:59am
Hi,
Just tried " Outlook /Cleanreminders" (in Online profile). Outlook started normally. No apparent change.
I also started it in cached exchange mode. No apparent change.
The availabilities are still not visible.
As mentioned above, Exchange store is the default.
So problem remains up to now.
October 30th, 2013 8:08am
Hi,
Just stopped Outlook and renamed the .ost file.
After restart, a new one is created. Alas, still same error message when trying to view availabilities on invites...
"Suggestions cannot be provided because free/busy data could not be retrieved".
Help !

Hi,
Try repairing Office in Control Panel.
Does this issue exist in Safe Mode?
Press Win + R and type outlook.exe /safe in the blank box, then press Enter.
If theres no problem in Safe Mode, disable the suspicious add-ins to verify which add-ins caused this issue.
Further more, can we create a new profile to have a try?
Thanks,

HI,
I will test quickly Safe mode and new profile tomorrow morning (CET) and let you know.
I was thinking that safe mode disabled free/busy, but I'll try.
I don't think repairing Office is the solution, but I will try too if two above fail.

Hi,
Just tested in Safe mode... no luck, still no availabilities.
About repairing Office, does it take Microsoft updates into account or do you have to re apply them afterwards ?
Will test a new profile soon.
November 6th, 2013 8:45am
Hi (again),
Here is a further test result : About new profile creation.
I created a new profile and put just my Exchange .ost file into it.
I tried to create an appointment with someone within my organization (same server).
Still the same (see attached picture) : cannot see availabilities.
Something new however : the suggestion pane is now giving information on conflicts whereas it didn't before.
I tested that with my former profile and it is the same (so it is not because of the new profile).... strange
May be a change on the server side ?

I just tried repairing Office (see picture).
Same result (see other picture). Note that this time I have no suggestion but the error message !
Behaviour is really weird
November 6th, 2013 6:04pm
Just noticed another problem (may be not linked, in this case pls tell me and ignore) : I cannot set Out of Office message, it tells me that the server is not available !
November 6th, 2013 6:05pm
Im having exactly same problem with Outlook 2013 and Exchange 2007.
Just let you know that you are not alone with this problem.

It looks the KB2837618 is the devill. After uninstall
kb2837618 and recreate Outlook profile, the FreeBusy and OOA Works fine again.
But this couldn't be the solution, because if you have to fix on x machine.. ........
I've run into the same problem, but removing KB2837618 does not seem to help. Outlook 2013 had been working fine for months but by some combination of updating either Office or Windows, I've started getting the "free/busy data could not be retrieved" error.
After removing the hot fix, free/busy works the FIRST time I run Outlook immediately after recreating the user profile, but if I shutdown and restart Outlook, it will not work again. This is the behavior I get on multiple machines with or without the KB
removed. Otherwise, these machines are fully updated.
It's really frustrating to lose basic functionality like this because you simply tried to do the right thing by keeping up with patches.

On my systems it works at all. After uninstall the path and recreate the outlook profile it runs smooth. Also after restart of outlook or computer. Only on interessting thing i had. On my system was the Patch installed back again, even i had set the patch in
wsus for uninstall.

You also need to remove KB2837643 (in 2 places) as this is a cumulative patch that reinstalls KB2837618 regardless of your WSUS setting for KB2837618

Thanks. I just learned that through another channel, and uninstalled them this morning. The function is indeed back running. I had to remove the KB updates from 3 places. I removed both KB2837618 and KB 2837643.
It's really a pity to see Microsoft behaving like that and delivering problems and not solutions. I know things are very complex, but still...
You can mark the issues as solved (solution is to remove the two KB patches for now) and close it.

This worked for me thanks for taking the time to write this all up!
December 9th, 2013 6:54pm
Hi, can I ask you where is this two places?
I have the same problem, but I'm not sure if the KB were installed or not. I try to find them into "Program and features -> See update installed" but I didn't find them.
Thank you very much,
Alessandro
January 10th, 2014 11:10am
Hi,
I didn't say two but three places.
Actually, my wording is a bit confusing. In terms of where you go to remove them, it is indeed "Program and features" and "see installed updates". Now within there, I had the KB listed several times (3) under different products (like "Microsoft Outlook 2013"
and "Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013") and I had to uninstall the KB from all three entries.
Note that, as per Robert Sparnaaij (http://www.howto-outlook.com, http://www.msoutlook.info)
: "Im aware of the issues but they are not as black and white as the article(s) suggest(s) and not that widespread either to do a general recommendation to uninstall
a security update. In case of the IMAP issues, they are actually wrong.", and "It was said to
be fixed with Path Tuesday for December (December 10) but unfortunately somehow the Outlook 2013 update missed the cut. It got published on December 13 after all but only was approved a little over 24 hours ago as KB2850061. However, at the moment, only the
downloads are available but not yet the KB article nor are they currently being offered via Microsoft Update so unfortunately, the issue will drag on a bit longer. Ive just published an article about it here:
http://www.howto-outlook.com/news/update-2013-12-ol2013.htm".
Lastly, "The KB article of the November update confirms that it fixes the Autodiscover connectivity issues with Exchange 2007:
If you are using Outlook to connect to a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 mailbox:
- You receive an error message that resembles either of the following when you try to configure Automatic Replies (Out of Office): Your automatic reply settings cannot be
displayed because the server is currently unavailable. Try again later.
- You cannot retrieve Free/Busy data for calendar scheduling.
- Add-ins that use the Account.SmtpAddress property no longer work.
These features rely on an underlying
Autodiscover technology. After you install this security update, Autodiscover may fail for Exchange 2007 configurations. Therefore, Outlook features that rely
on Autodiscover will also stop working. To resolve these issues, install update 2850061."
Hope this helps.
January 10th, 2014 11:32am
I have removed all KBs mentioned in this thread but the problem remains.
January 15th, 2014 10:38pm
I tried this step and many of the others in this article. The only thing that worked for me to resolve this issue was to run a repair on office.
Run -> Appwiz.cpl -> Office 2013 standard -> Change -> Repair -> Reboot -> Open Outlook and verify.
February 11th, 2014 4:48pm
As mentioned solution for this problem, was to apply latest Microsoft update.
February 11th, 2014 5:47pm
Hello, yes, the solution was to apply latest Microsoft updates, but you need to search the update from Microsoft Word or Excel: File -> Help -> Update.
I tried it and seems worked for me!! :) The update can be apply 24 hours later the upgrade, so, you can see the real effect the day after.
I hope this help you!

I have tried all the above, including removing the KB's and installing the SP1 for office 2013. I still have this problem. Very frustrating that simple functionality stopped working.
March 18th, 2014 10:42pm
I'm surprised ! for me the problem is solved applying KB fix and even with SP1 applied.
March 19th, 2014 8:26am
Hello,
did you try to update the Office from Word or Excel?
Alessandro
March 21st, 2014 10:53am
Two days after updating, outlook has now started showing Free/ Busy information. Not sure what fixed it.
March 26th, 2014 1:57am
It's normal. One time you updated the Office, only after 24/48 hours the update corrects the problem, not immediately.

I have been suffering with the same problem since installing Office 2013/365. My co-workers can not see my free/busy info, they can't see shared resources like conference rooms. I still had Office 2007 installed and our hosted exchange server
is 2007.
What worked for me was:
- Uninstall Office 2007
- Perform a repair on Office 2013
- Reboot
- Start Outlook normally
I will say, the link for the command-line switches is not updated to the new Office 2013. From Windows 8.1, I clicked Win-R to open the Run box, then this is exactly what I put in there:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15\Outlook.exe" /cleanfreebusy
And I get the same error everyone else does that "cleenfreebusy" is not a valid command-line switch.
When I opened Outlook normally after the repair it seemed to temporarily fixed the problem, but after a subsequent reboot the issue is back again.
I don't have either of the 2 KB updates installed on my machine, my machine is newer and only recently setup a few weeks ago.
My version of Outlook comes from 365 subscription, version 15.0.4615.1002

This switch was used to remove free/busy data from the Public Folder Free/Busy, which is no longer supported in Outlook 2013. (This is one of many reasons why Outlook 2013 won't work with Exchange 2003. |
