Outlook 2010 reply all function adds an random persons email address in the conversation

Hello World,

Got this strange issue. A user sent an email to two users and once sent she clicked reply all. The others users have not replied back to her all however in the reply all draft email it added a random internal email address of someone else who was not part the original email sent.

User is adamant that she did not BCC the person nor has she ever contacted that person. In fact just to bcc someone in outlook she would have to actively enable that option. Whats strange is that she gets this error only in this email, all other emails are working fine and do not have this error. In the end she clicked reply all and removed the random email address.

Checked rules and there are no rules in place.

Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers

Hi,

I haven't realized there is any similar function in Outlook... Actually you said it was a random internal email address, definitely there is no point for Outlook to bring out a random address and apparently something is wrong here, we just need to figure out how this address was brought out.

The first thing I suggest is to start Outlook in Safe Mode:

Press Win + R, type "outlook.exe /safe" in the blank box, press Enter.

When Outlook starts in Safe Mode, all add-ins will be disabled, check if the problem persists. If the issue doesn't exist then, we may suspect one add-in caused the issue, please disable the suspicious add-ins to verify which one caused the issue.

As this issue is related to the email recipients, I wonder if it's related to the AutoComplete cache, which is used to provide possible matches to names and email addresses gathered from the email that you have sent in the past. Please turn this feature off in Outlook, then test if the issue persists.

  • In Outlook, click File -> Options.
  • Select the Mail tab.
  • Scroll roughly halfway down until you see Send messages. Untick the Use AutoComplete List to suggest names when typing in the To, Cc, and Bcc lines box.
  • Click OK.

Hi,

We had this same issue and we found the answer after doing some digging :) This is a feature in Outlook 2010 and 2013 and there is an option to add a persons email to an email you have initiated when the recipient responds. I have added a screen shot so you can understand since it's a little difficult to explain :)

Open a new email --> options --> Direct replies to

Hope this help

Thanks
