Outlook 2010 not showing up under default programs .

I'm running a windows server 2008 R2 and one of the clients is complaining the mailto protocol opens google chrome .

did the following :

-Checked the default programs ( only chrome shows up in here )
-Checked the registry key  ( root , local machine and users ) they are pointing to the outlook.exe

I'm kind off at a loss here , why am i not seeing outlook in the default program , i do see chrome and the mailto protocol is ticked on here but grayed out ...

Hi,

This issue may occur if Chrome overrides the system default mail client and links it to a web mail service instead.

We may open Chrome, go to chrome://settings/handlers and make sure the protocol handlers list is empty. We can click the 'X' icon next to the entry to remove the protocol handlers. After that, test the issue again and let me know the result.

Hi Steve ,

Thanks for the answer .
The list of handlers is empty as i emptied it once before ( been searching for a solution for some time now ) but forgot to mention it above .

-Checked the default programs ( only chrome shows up in here )

By this, do you mean when we go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations, the Current Default column shows Chrome for the mailto URL?

If we click the Change Program button, can you change it to Outlook?

In addition, we may also try to change the default browser to Internet Explorer and then test the issue again.

Please let me know the result.

Hi Steve ,

yes that is exactly what i mean .
So when i go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\  i see only chrome in the list ( Can't post images yet on here )

When i go further and check the protocols for the mailto i only get the option to select chrome once again ...
And when I check what chrome is associated with i see the mailto protocol but the checkbox is grayed out ( so no chance of changing it here , it is indeed ticked on )

I tried setting IE to the default browser but that didn't change anything .
Currently I'm awaiting answer from the customer to uninstall Chrome and see if it changes at that point.

Hello,

Did you get any information from the customer? Has the customer tried uninstalling Chrome? If there is any information, please keep me posted.

Thanks,

Hi ,

So i got the chance to uninstall chrome on the terminal server .
Once that was done it would open mailto links in outlook .

The moment i reinstall chrome , it magically adds the mailto protocol back to chrome with the option grayed out once again ...

Alright so to add to this issue .

Since uninstalling chrome the mailto protocol would open link in internet explorer now ( with a test link or whilst browsing in IE already )

Since then links from other programs would not open in IE .

Example : Client received a mail with a link in it and would get the error that the application is not found , Hence i go and check the default programs and the list is completly empty ....

-> i had to go ahead and reinstall Chrome again as an emergency solution .

I do believe the issue here lies not with chrome but with the fact that nothing but chrome is showing up in the default program list ... Anyone got an idea what could be causing this ?

Right ,

i found out what the issue was ( It's been a productive morning )
turns out HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ RegisteredApplications
Was empty , after adding the correct keys again it seems to be working as it should
