Outlook 2010 fails to auto create profile when using the account wizard
Fresh install of office 2010 pro on windows 7 32bit. When I launch outlook, the outlook auto account wizard starts. I go through the wizard, it automatically detects my email address through AD and when I click on next to finish, it fails with "An unknown Error Occured, error 0x80070057". Seems to not be able to auto detect my exchange server settings. If I manually create a profile (same email address) and manually enter my exchange server name, it works fine. Any ideas?

Hi, Does this issue happen on all client machines permanently? And auto detect is the feature in the exchange product, you can put this issue in the exchange forum. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/exchangeserver

We're having this problem as well, and yes, it's global across all client machines. However, this only happens on our new build machines with Office 2010 on Windows 7. Office 2007 on Windows XP, on our old build, is fine, so we're guessing it's not AutoDiscover that's the problem, hence reposting in this forum.

Also, we're still running Exchange 2007. As this error code is apparently something to do with an incorrect or undefined parameter, could it be that we need to be running Exchange 2010 to have AutoDiscover work properly with Outlook 2010? Are there any logs we can consult for more information?

Hi Patrick, Based on my research, this issue has appeared as a bug in Office 2010 beta 2 before. But it has been fixed now. So if you are using office 2010 beta with earliest version, please upgrade it to office 2010 RTM version to see if this issue goes away.

We also have this issue but it only affects users that have mailboxes held on Exchange 2003 MBX servers. If we move the same mailbox to a 2007 MBX server, Outlook is able to load the mail profile correctly. We are using version 14.0.4760.1000 of Office 2010.

It seems the issue related to Exchange server. So maybe we should put this thread to exchange forum to get more help.

Hi The thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/3bb5b9c9-0749-40f2-926c-b136ab86cdf6 This is copied and pasted from another thread: Hi, Running Test Email AutoConfiguration from the Outlook client to check if the Autodiscover function is working properly. 1. While Outlook 2007 is running, hold down the CTRL key, right-click the Outlook icon in the notification area, and then select Test E-mail AutoConfiguration . Verify that the correct e-mail address is in the box next to E-mail Address . Clear the check boxes next to Use Guessmart and Secure Guessmart Authentication . On the Test E-mail AutoConfiguration page , verify that the check box next to Use AutoDiscover is selected, and then click the Test button. You can post the result for further help. Besides, if you have .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1 or the .NET Framework 2.0 with SP2 installed on your Exchange Server, then I recommend you to apply the following hotfix: Outlook 2007 crashes or you cannot access OOF settings after you install a package that contains the .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1 and the .NET Framework 2.0 with SP2 on an Exchange 2007 Client Access server or on an Exchange 2010 Client Access server http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958934/EN-US Jonas Andersson MCTS: Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/2010 | MCITP: EMA 2007/2010 | MCSE/MCSA Blog: http://www.testlabs.se/blog

Test Email AutoConfiguration can only be run once Outlook has been loaded and by then everything is working correctly. Whilst Jones' reply is helpful it should not be marked as the answer to this thread.

If your are currently on office 2003 or earlier, I suggest that you first install office 2007 and then upgrade to office 2010. We experienced the same problem in our environment and this solution worked.

(Big sigh) ... Putting together all the Microsoft nonsense on this topic, it seems that they've made some bad assumptions in code they added to Outlook 2010. There is a workaround, but it's a per-user registry setting, so still a pain in the proverbial. I'm thinking that the best plan for deployment will be to import a REG file in the login script. Anyway, here's the workaround. Create a file called Autodiscover.xml somewhere that every user can access it, and fill it with this: <Autodiscover xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/exchange/autodiscover/responseschema/2006"> <Response xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/exchange/autodiscover/outlook/responseschema/2006a"> <Account> <AccountType>email</AccountType> <Action>settings</Action> <Protocol> <Type>EXCH</Type> <Server>exchange.fredmail.com</Server> </Protocol> </Account> </Response> </Autodiscover> Be sure to change the server name to that of your own email server! Add an REG_SZ named whatever your email domain is (e.g. fredmail.com) to the key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\AutoDiscover and fill it with the path to the XML file (e.g. \\fileserver\shared\Autodiscover.xml). You might have to create the keys below HKLM\Software\Microsoft if Office has not yet been run on the computer. Now run Outlook again, and the automatic setup should work. Hopefully. Good luck!!

(Bigger sigh)... But don't ask me why all the <CR><LF>s disappeared from my previous post. I have bigger problems to deal with! ;-)
