Outlook 2010 crashes when I dismiss reminders

I have an issue where when I open Outlook 2010, my reminders pop-up. When click dismiss all or if I highlight one reminder and click dismiss... Outlook crshes.

I've tried the /cleanreminders fix and the mso.dll fix and neither helped.

Any other ideas?

you have to many reminders and never click dismiss all!

Just kidding.

Try creating a new outlook profile and testing to see if it continues...

I have the same issue, started yesterday. Wonder if one of the recent Office updates from Microsoft had anything to do with it? There were quite a few Office updates installed on my PC on 4-23-2012, four of which are Outlook specific.

I've tried running in on-line mode as well as caching, still get the error.

I've also try /cleansniff as well as /cleanreminders

Here's data from my crash, is it the same as yours?:

I can't speak for the thread owner, but I have similar experience, and new profile didn't help. Also tried starting Outlook on another computer entirely and in on-line mode and had the same crash.

OK, figured it out. Uninstall the following update:

Microsoft Outlook 2010 (KB2553248) 32-Bit Edition

We have an open case with Microsoft right now regarding this issue.  The only workaround is to Uninstall the KB25553248 update.  Also.. Outlook will crash when you open specific appointments.  In our case, those appointments were specifically created by using Exchange Web Services.  I'm not sure if in your case you had appointments that were created using EWS.  I'll let you know the resolution from MS once I know it.

I had the same problem after a clean install of Windows 7 x64 and Office Professional Plus 2010 32bit. Uninstalling KB2553248 worked for me too.  To make it a little easier for anyone else to find the update in the list the full name of the update I uninstalled is "Update for Microsoft Outlook 2010 (KB2553248) 32-Bit Edition."

Uninstalling KB2553248 worked for me too. I had the 64 bit variety though. Also... another oddity that I noticed was I had "2" instances of this patch installed on my machine... both on the same day... So when I uninstalled the 1st instance... the issue remained. When I uninstalled the 2nd instance... it told me I needed to reboot. After rebooting... no more crashes!!!

I hope this helps someone else...

Thanks Everyone!!!

In my case it was any appointments.

We have a ticket system that generates appointments. Those would crash... and those I generated in Outlook would crash also if I tried to close or dismiss a reminder.

Thanks Bill, I tried that but got the same result...

RMS-Tech,

I'll bet that your ticket system uses Exchange Web Services (EWS) to create those appointments.  Do you know if this is the case?

zman63,

I am definitely seeing the correlation between the crashing and appointments generated using EWS. The appointments causing Outlook to crash on my end are all generated by our ticketing system (AutoTask) which automatically syncs our dispatch appointments with Exchange via EWS.  Any appointments manually created in Outlook can be dismissed without issue.

I removed KB2553248 a couple days ago and it resolved the issue and I was able to dismiss any items generated using Exchange Web Services.  I tried dismissing an item today and Outlook crashed again.  So I checked my installed updates and sure enough KB2553248 was back in the list. I have automatic updates enabled so I'm guessing that's the culprit since I don't recall installing updates manually.  So if anyone continues to encounter the issue just make sure the update wasn't inadvertently installed again.

Hello,

from another Microsoft forum (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2755490&SiteID=1 - link unfortunately dead now), a solution was provided:

In the registry, go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

Rename "msacm.voxacm16" to "no.msacm.voxacm16".

But if that entry is not there, rename "msacm.voxacm160" to "no.msacm.voxacm160".

You can do that automatically using a REG file with the following contents:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]
"msacm.voxacm160"=-
"no.msacm.voxacm160"="vct3216.acm"

For "vct3216.acm", of course, enter whatever was originally there under "msacm.voxacm160" since the new key serves as a backup for that setting so that it could be reverted in case of any problems.

Kind regards.

UPDATE:

In my case, it seems to be another ACM codec in addition. After disabling the vct3216.acm (Voxware Metasound) the problem initially seemed to have gone. But after switching to another Outlook profile (Exchange) the problem reappeared. For now, I have disabled all ACM codecs with the Codec Tweak Tool, and the crashes now seem to have gone. Hope that it really fixed the crashes now.

Kind regards,
DAC324
