Outlook 2010 PowerPoint and PDF attachment will not open

We have an Executive Assistant who has access to two mailboxes, her own and her Supervisor and both are added to her Outlook 2010 profile.

When the Supervisor send her a PowerPoint 2010 file, it cannot be opened with the error (detected a problem and can attempt to repair it).

When she opens it from HIS mailbox (same PC, same Outlook profile) it works as expected.  It appears that only the received copy is the issue.  The original copy is on another machine, and was added to Outlook as an attachment from there.  The second copy of the Outlook mailbox (on the assistants machine) also opens as expected.

  • We have tried saving it locally and opening, same result
  • We have adjusted DCOMCNFG as suggested in KB2387587
  • We have adjusted many of the Trust Center Settings including
  • - Disabling Protected View
  • - Adding C:\ to trusted locations
  • - Allow Trusted Documents on network (on and off)
  • - Adjusted File Block Settings

I am not sure what to try next, but I as thinking about re-installing office, but I do not have a lot of faith that that will correct the problem.  Any suggestions outside of the ones we have already tried?

Thank you in advance for your time.

Hi,

The problem sounds like being created during the delivery process, as there is no problem in the sender's mailbox but only on the recipient's side.

Have you tried the "Open and Repair" feature in PowerPoint to open the file? This can repair some corrupted files and then open them directly:

Open PowerPoint, click File -> Open -> Choose the file location, select the file, expand the list beside "Open" then choose "Open and Repair".

To know whether the file has been changed/modified, we can also compare the file size on the sender and the recipient's side, see if there is a difference.

Please also let the recipient check the result on OWA, could the file be opened on OWA? The result will tell us if Outlook is the culprit, or the issue is actually created before the attachment comes to the Outlook client.

Thanks Melon,

We did try the repair option first, but it was unsuccessful.  Sizes are the same on both ends.  The cached copy of the Supervisor's mailbox on the Assistant's PC has the attachment in it and it opens fine.  I am sure it has something to do with it being flagged as a 'received' message and I had not thought about trying via OWA.  I will give it a shot, but I expect the same result. Mainly because if I save the file off to the local drive, I still have the same issue on the recipients side.

I will update you once I get that tested.

Same results when accessing via Outlook web.  I have also determined that it is more than just one file.  She has not been able to open any of the PPT files sent to her from this user.

Hi,

Please send one of these .ppt files to me, which can't be opened on the user's client, I'll check it on my side.
