Outlook 2010 Global Address List not updating in cached mode (Network Steve Forum)
Outlook 2010 Global Address List not updating in cached mode
Running Exchange 2010 with Outlook 2010 and since the beginning of September my Global Address List is not updating when in Cached Mode. When switched to no-cached mode it is up-to-date. I tried the "download address book" under send/receive, but that did not solve the issue. I also deleted all the *.oab files in my Directory: C:\Documents and Settings\User Profile\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook: And restarted my Outlook and it seems to work but only for the issue to reappear again when Outlook is restarted. Any idea why Outlook is defaulting to this faulty?

Is the OAB generating successfully on the server? Are the files being copied to the CAS server for the web-based OAB?

Hi, Can you confirm that the offline address book generation is actually running on the exchange server? Leif

It sounds like the OAB is either not being generated properly. One nice walkthrough on troubleshooting OAB generation problems can be found here: http://blogs.msdn.com/dgoldman/archive/2005/07/16/439665.aspx

Make sure the service Microsoft Exchange File Distribution Service was set to automatic and started

I understand that you have taken Exchange 2003 server I think you should have moved all mailboxes to Exchange 2010 before offline, but one question is here, Have you also moved relevant public folder(system folder) to the new Exchange 2010 mailbox server? Meanwhile, Please let me know if your client is using outlook 2007 because only Outlook 2007 support OAB Web distribution with Exchange 2010. whehter you can view GAL info correctly while in online mode? The GAL query data from local OAB files instead of from Server in cache mode. So I think the reason that cleanup old OAB files can fix it as the current workaround. That is because client will redownload OAB files from Exchange 2010 with web distribution method. I would like to explain that Exchange 2010 distribute OAB files with web distribution method by default instead of public folder distribution on exchange 2003 server. With previously Exchange 2003 server, Outlook client download OAB files from Public folder method. With this public folder distribution method, you must specify the OAB and pubic folder to your mailbox store. However, Exchange 2010 do not use this method by default. Therefore, after shutting down exchange 2003 server, client cannot find the public folder to update local OAB. At this time, you may check if you have enabled public folder distribution on the default offline address book. If not, please create a public folder store on Exchange 2010 server and select the public folder store and default offline address book to relevant to mailbox store. Please refer to the following steps. 1. Create a public folder store on mailbox server. 2. On sever configuration->Make sure that you have specify the public folder store and Offline address book on the “client settings” tab of mailbox server role. 3. To enable public folder distribution on the default offline address book, On organization configuration->mailbox->”offline address book”-> right click the default offline address book , choose properties-> “distribution”-> select “public folder distribution”. Above steps are not enough unless the new public folder store have the OAB folder in the public folder, so you need bring Exchange 2003 server online and add Exchange 2010 as the replication for system folder on public folder tree( you need click view system folder to show the system folder). Meanwhile, I also suggest you read this KB article: How to remove the first Exchange Server 2003 computer from the administrative group http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822931

Hi, Is GAL updated in OWA? Does the issue occur on certain user or each user? If the issue occurs on certain user, I suggest you rebuild the Outlook profile to check the result. Otherwise, please refer to the following steps. 1. Access the following location and check whether the OAB file is latest. Please verify the time under the “Date Modified” tab. The OAB file is usually generated every day. C:\Program files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ExchangeOAB\<some GUID> 2. Access the following location and check whether the latest OAB file is published successfully. Please verify the time under the “Date Modified” tab. The OAB file is usually updated every day. C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ClientAccess\OAB\<some GUID> Meanwhile, please type the following cmdlet to increase the Event Log level and monitor the Event log. If there is any OAB Event error, please post it here. Thanks.
