Outlook 2010 - Outlook hangs when receiving emails

I've noticed that Outlook 2010 hangs/pause when an email is being received in the Inbox.  For example, Outlook hangs.  I terminate outlook.exe.  Reopen Outlook and behold new emails in the Inbox.

Corrupted rules?  Disable alerts?

Suggestions in what to look for?

Thanks

Ron

Sorry guys.

We are in a Exchange 2010 enterprise on-premise environment, and we don't use cache mode.  Our desktops are virtual desktop's.  Therefore, cache mode is not really supported.

In our environment, PST's are not supported and cache mode (ost's).

It is hard to pinpoint the issue when add-ins are required for the users.  Therefore, troubleshooting becomes difficult.

If you guys are aware of a tool that reports on add-ins, that would be great.

Thanks

Hi Ron,

How many users are affected by this? Does this happen to every email message that received or some?

Actually, there are lots of causes for Outlook hangs, freezes or stops working errors. I would suggest we first try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue

  • Disable virus scanner integration. A virus scanner will scan each email that received, this might cause the issue. So if you do have a virus scanner installed which integrates itself with Outlook, disable this integration and try again.
  • Reset send/receive settings. If the file (srs-file) in which Outlook keeps the settings gets corrupted somehow, the send/receive will crash. The default location of this file is: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook\, just rename it to .old, then verify result.

Also, you might want to check Outlooks crash log, and see if it says anything useful there.

Ethan,

Since our desktops are VDI, we don't use virus scanning at the moment, and because of VDI, we can't use cache mode.

Right now, I'm trying your suggestion with a few folks.

Thanks

Ethan,

Creating a new SRS file didn't work.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks
