There is no requirement to use it. I wouldn't disable it however. I would never delete a connector that is created by setup. I would leave it be.

As Andy suggested, it is not recommended to delete the receive connector that is created by Exchange server setup. You just need to let it there. Outbound Proxy Frontend receive connector accepts messages from a Send Connector on a back-end server, with front-end proxy enabled.

I agree with Andy and Amy.

On the send connectors there is an option called "proxy through client access server".If that option is selected then the smtp connections from the mailbox server to the external world or else to the other exchange organisation will be proxied via client access server to the destination server.Those proxied connections from the mailbox servers are received by the outbound proxy front end connector in the client access server.

In your case , emails to the external world is queued in the mailbox server because you have disabled the outbound proxy front end connector in your cas server and at the same time you would be having the option "proxy through client access server" enabled on the send connectors.
