Out of Office reply not working across various Mailbox Databases
Hi guys (gender non-specific ;-) ) I have detected what seems to be a rather worrying problem. I had reports that despite enabling Out of Office (OOO) via Outlook Web Access, people are find that Out of Office is NOT working. This is not across the board, but so far it has been reported by 10 people that have noticed, across at least 5 databases. I tested fairly thoroughly with a "test" account, and moved it onto a Database that had an affected user experiencing this problem. After sending an email to this test mailbox and getting a response, any subsequent disabling and then re-enabling of OOO would not generate another OOO message. I suspected perhaps I should investigate the Databases, but I moved User A onto a "good" Database, and no matter what I do there are NO OOO responses being generated from her (Disabled her OWA access, moved Database). The transport logs in fact also illustrate that since the 30th July, NO OOO messages have been sent. I am absolutely positive she has her OOO setup, and has asked for responses to be sent between 30th July and 16th August to both internal and external mailers. In addition, I can see she has received 50 emails since the 30th from various different senders. I'm not convinced that this is an issue with the interface being used (OWA versus Outlook), because my test account demonstrates the exact same behaviour when on this Database and whether using OWA or Outlook. HOWEVER, the real spanner in the works are these users who despite being moved to other Databases still do not get a functioning OOO. This then points at a mailbox problem. Does anyone know the OOO function well enough to comment and maybe lend some ideas as to where to go from here? Tom

Try restarting the MSExchangeMailboxAssistants service and see if that makes a difference.

Hi, Before going on, I would like to confirm the following questions: Whether both OWA and Outlook clients are having the issue? What's the version of the Exchange server? Was any error message received in the Event Log? To confirm whether the database is the cause, you can run the isinteg -alltests -fix command to check it. Thanks Allen

Hi Allen, It is apparent whether you use OWA or Outlook, based on my test account anyway. Exchange 2007 SP1 I couldn't find any obvious, related event log entry I must say. I actually managed to fix the person who reported it. I moved her to another Database, mine in fact, where I knew OOO worked. After a few hours I could start to see OOO responses being sent from her mailbox. These were the first that were being sent in 5 days since she initially started OOO. Thgis was an issue for her over a month previous but I was initially sceptical so asked her ITSS to get further observations. However, it is indeed an issue, I just dont know how widespread (5 reports soo far of this happening, from just 1 ITSS who has noticed. We have 100's of ITSS). Thanks for the input Allen. Tom
