OteleData****_**.eti files makes %100 CPU usage anytime Outlook 2013 is open

Hi,

I have an Issue with my Outlook2013, as soon as opening the software my hard disk starts working like crazy and my Ram and CPU usage goes to %100 , and when I am checking my computers resources , under Disks I see that the files named  OteleData****_**.eti (under System) occupies all my resources, I tried to search more about this and found out that these are telemetry files from outlook and tried to stop them using a new registry key but it did not work, I really appreciate if anyone can help me to solve this issue.

Regards,

By the way the Logging files format should be "Outlook-########.etl" , but I think OteleData_####_##.etl should be the telemetry files, I have tried to make a new registry key to stop the telemetry but it didn't work.

Hi,

The OteleData_####_##.etl files are under c:\user\<username>\appdata\local\Microsoft\Office, it's safe to delete the files. I tested it from my side, the OteleData_####_##.etl would still be created if Outlook was running. But I noticed that if the " Enable troubleshooting logging option" was disabled, the file remains 0 KB.

However I havent figure out what triggered the generation of those files. Does disabling troubleshooting logs help on performance? Please let me know.

Thank you!

Hi,

Sorry for the late response.

I tested from my side, haven't found a way to stop the file from generating yet. However, based on my test, if we disabled the trouble shooting log, the file will remains 0 KB. That means no I/O.

Do you mind telling me if you still have the performance issue after Disabling troubleshooting logging?

Hi,

thanks for the reply, as I have mentioned the troubleshooting log is already disabled but as soon as starting the outlook it starts generating 50Mb oteledata####.etl files and use %100 if the CPU and Ram and use all the HDD communication (take over all the resources of the PC) after searching more  about this issue I found this :

but making a new key to disable the telemetry did not help me and the issue still exists, I have tried to repair the office files trough re installation but no chance of the repair.(I have scanned my computer for viruses and Malware and it is fully clean)

this is a dead end for me now and I don't know how to solve it, please help me to solve this issue.

Hi,

I'd like to check two more things with you:

1. What is your mail account type, is it IMAP? Exchange? or POP3?

2. Do you have mutiple account configure for Outlook?

Hi,

I have several mail accounts (more then 7) set in my Outlook and have most of them set as POP3s, do you think this can be an issue for POP3 emails?

I have several Gmails, outlook, aol s set as pop3.(I'm not sure about outlook I think it should be exchange)

May 27th, 2015 8:56am

I was experiencing this same issue, and may have found a culprit. For whatever reason, memory was leaking when Outlook was open and I started using Word as the email editor.

While not a super solution if you are using a bluetooth keyboard (I am not), if you have a Bluetooth/radio device on your machine, try disabling the module. Mine was/is Broadcom. After I disabled the Bluetooth Module under Bluetooth Radio in Control Panel - My Devices, the memory leak stopped. I have not/attempted to update the driver yet, as I'm just happy that Outlook is working for now. Not sure what the connection may be, or if it's completely unrelated, but so far, so good.

Hi,

May I ask one more question, if Outlook behave always like this or the issue starts all of a sudden?

June 1st, 2015 3:20am

Hi,

The reason why I asked about IMAP account is because someone mentioned Gmail in this thread. But as you stated in your previous reply, your Gmail account has been configured as POP3, so I thought I'd check this from other perspectives. If you don't mind, we can give it a try.

Also do you mind to help me with two more questions:

1. If Outlook behave always like this or the issue starts all of a sudden?

2. What is your Office version, could you please share the build number with me?

Thank you.

Hi,

yes it starts generating the files and occupy all the resources (%100 Ram,%100CPU and all the HDD interactions) as soon as I open the outlook.

When did this issue start? It behaved always like this? Or started at certain point of time?

For change registry key, please first backup your current setting by export Office registry key to your local drive, then proceed following steps:

  • Click Start, type regedit in the Start search box, and then click regedit.exe in the Programs list.
  • In Registry Editor, locate the following subkey for Outlook 2013:
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\Options\Mail
    • In the right pane, right-click >New->DWORD (32-bit) Value
    • Rename the Value to EnableLogging
    • Right click EnableLogging ->Modify ->In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, type  0 under Value data, and then click OK.
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\ClientTelemetry
    • In the right pane, right-click >New->DWORD (32-bit) Value
    • Rename the Value to DisableTelemetry

Hello,

Sorry but it doesn't work for me...
Each time I restart Outlook, the value ClientTelemetry is reset to 0. Really weird !

Any idea ?

Thanks,

Hi Nicolas:

Please follow steps below,  Ive tested from my side, it successfully prevented the OTeledata*.etl file from generating.  let me know the result.

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\Options\Mail

-       New a DWORD (32-bit) Value EnableLogging ->type  0 under Value data, and then click OK.

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\ClientTelemetry

-       New a DWORD (32-bit) Value DisableTelemetry ->type 1 under Value data, and then click OK.

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\15.0\osm

-        New a DWORD (32-bit) Value "Enablelogging" -> type  0 under Value data, and then click OK.

-       New a DWORD (32-bit) Value "EnableUpload" -> type  0 under Value data, and then click OK.

Note: After modifying above keys, the first load of Outlook will be very slow.

Hi Nicolas:

Sorry, my mistake, the last step should be:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\15.0\osm]
"Enablelogging"=dword:00000000
"EnableUpload"=dword:00000000

Please delete those old OReledata*.etl files and reboot your PC. Let me know the result.

And by default, the registry entry should be like pictures below.

No... still the same behavior.

The thing is that the value DisableTelemetry (under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\ClientTelemetry) is reset to 0 each time I start Outlook. really strange !

Thanks for your support.

Hi Nicolas:

Thanks for the updating.

After reinstallation, did you modify those registry keys? I thought the reason that the solution didn't work for you is because ...\ClientTelemetry auto reset to 0. Though I haven't figured out why yet. Anyway, glad the issue has been sorted out.
