Orphaned Mailboxes after migration?
Hey guys I have a question about orphaned mailboxes after a migration. I have a Exchange 2003 box that had 40 users. I migrated those users to Exchange 2007 using the Exchange 2007 "Exchange Management Console". Everyone moved and completed successfully, but looking in 2003's Exchange System Manager there are a handful of mailboxes that show up as orphaned (red circle with an x). The size of the orphaned mailboxes are really small 7-41KB with 0 items. When I was migrtating the mailboxes I told the wizard to ignore up to 30 corrupted items, nothing else out of the ordinary. I have not had any reports of any of those users having problems connecting and getting into their migrated mailbox.Any idea why these are still hanging around and how to get rid of them?Thanks!Mike

They're disconnected, and waiting for the cleanup process to remove them. You should be able to right-click on the mail store and force a cleanup if you want to remove them from the list.

Those are duplicate Mailboxes. Are you able to delete them? If not trying moving the mailbox back to Exchange 2003 from Exchange 2007. It will fail, but will remove the duplicate mailboxes from the source server.

I have this issue as well and kind of new to Exchange.The previous admin for these servers has this set of tasks that we are to do to resolve the issue. I would be curious what you guys think about this. 1. In AD verify the mail box limit and smtp of the account 2. In AD Remove Exchange Attribute in the account that have the duplicate mailbox 3. Run Mailbox Clean up at both locations to ensure that the good mailbox has a red X and the duplicate mailbox does not 4. Ensure that the bad mail box (stub)has a red X 5. In Exchange System Manager, in the duplicate mailbox (stub) -> reconnect 6. In AD Delete mailbox 7. Run Mailbox Clean up at both locations, verified the duplicate (stub) mailbox has a red X 8. Purge the stub or the bad mailbox. This will delete the stub-> Refresh 9. Reconnect the good mailbox 10. Ensure that there is no red X on the good mail box 11. Verify the SMTP and X.400 email addresses repopulate and reset mailbox limit reset on AD if necessary.Once we reconnect the mailbox from the destination back to the user it takes around 20+ minutes for the smtp and x.400 addresses repopulate in the user's account configuration.It also looks like in the migrations that the user's are losing their custom mailbox limit set in the AD account configuration.Fred Towery
