Opening Win8 workgroup files in Excel SLOW

Here is the topology.  Workgroup file sharing.  Opening an Excel file on a W7 machine with Office 2003.  When the file is hosted on an XP machine, the file opens fast.  When the file is hosted on a Win8 machine the file opens SLOW, like count to 15 seconds slow.  Nothing else is changed.  I can recreate this on a second computer and it is even slow with Excel 2013 trying to open the file and not Excel 2003.  I added the network shares as trusted locations in Excel 2013.  No help.

Hi,

Based on your description, I assume your topology scenario. (Environment "PC 1: Window 7& Excel 2003","PC 2: Window XP", "PC 3: Window 8","PC4: Excel 2013")

  • When you use PC1 to open Excel file in PC2, it opens fast.
  • When you use PC1 and PC4 to open the file it opens slowly.

Which Excel format are you using? XLS or XLSX?

Do the issue occur in opening the local file with Excel 2013?

The issue may be caused by the "Office File Validation". It verifies that a particular binary file complies with the applications expectations. Office File Validation can help prevent unknown binary file format attacks against Microsoft Office 97-2003 file formats.

We may try to turn off it to test if it is helpful:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Excel\Security\FileValidation

REG_DWORD: EnableOnLoad

Value: 0

On the other hand, If Excel 2013 has a lot of add-ins, it'll take more time to load it. We may try to disable some of them before starting.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply.  The file is .xls, pretty sure .xlsx also opens slowly but I will check it later today.

Any PC opening file from Win 8 (PC3) is slow.  Any PC opening file from XP (PC2) is fast.  Either Excel 2003 or Excel 2013.  Even slow if I already have Excel up and use the Excel open file process rather than double click the file over the network.  Browsing files is fast.  Opening an Excel file is SLOW.  I made that registry change on one of the W7 pcs and it had no affect.  I can try it on the other one.   It is not opening Excel that is slow, it is opening the file.  File is not large, maybe 15KB.  Takes well over 15 sec to open and even if you make no changes it takes more than that to close the file.  I will post again after some more testing.

Yes, your prior suggestion had already been implemented with no effect.  Any other help appreciated.  I replied above with latest information.

Hi,

This issue may be related to the Server Message Block (SMB) Protocol, it has the several different versions and uses by different Windows operating systems, We may try to disable the SMB 3.0 in Windows 8 to test.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2696547/en-us

And, we also may try to turn off the "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) setting in Excel 2003/2013 to test.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211494/en-us

Hope it's helpful.

Thanks
