Online maintenance, users and backups
Hello Running Exchange 2007 SP2 on Windows 2008 Server. We are running Single Copy Cluster Exchange servers, Active/ Active/ Passive. Our backups are configured for a FULL on Fridays and incrementals on the other days (to flush the logs) I remember in Exchange 2000/2003, we configured our backups and online maintenance to avoid conflicting. Three questions: 1. Is this still the case with Exchange 2007? Or does it not make much of a difference? 2. How does online maintenance affect user experience? We have some departments that access their mailboxes 24/7...not sure how this will work with online maintenance? 3. Am I correct that if online maintenance doesn't finish, this will lead to store growth?

If the maintenance schedule extends beyond the duration of the backup the defrag will resume. >2. How does online maintenance affect user experience? We have some departments that access their mailboxes 24/7...not sure how this will work with online maintenance? It depends on how well your server handles the additional workload. If they're working in cached mode they might see a little delay in the delivery of messages, but nothing's going to catch on fire. Just don't do this during regular working hours. >3. Am I correct that if online maintenance doesn't finish, this will lead to store growth? Somewhat. As long as it completes a pass every few days you should be okay. Scheduling a maintenance period during the day on Saturday or Sunday long enough to complete a full pass, to gether with the partial passes during the week, should keep things in check. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
