- Notebook is located in directory on Server 2008 R2
- User1 one creates a file link to page "file:///\\SERVER\ServerDirectory\File.docx"
- User1 Can click to open file any time without incident
- User2 clicks same link that results in error
"Unable to open file:///\\SERVER\ServerDirectory\File.docx. Cannot open the specified file". - Same works in reverse. User1 cannot open file links created by User2
- All clients running WIN7 Pro with all updates.
- All permissions are properly set, i.e. users can easily browse to file locations and open files without incident.
- "Repairing" Microsoft Office does not solve problem.

Hi,
Just check if User2 can access to file:///\\SERVER\ServerDirectory.
If the location could be accessed, is the File.docx file visible there? If visible, double-click the File.docx file and check the result.
Please feel free to let me know the result.

thank you for answering Steve. Somehow I missed your original post, but I just checked, and yes. If user1 follows link
file:///\\SERVER\ServerDirectory, the location can be accessed and the file can be opened. User2 can also open location and open file. The error only seems to occur when user1 creates the link in Onenote, and user2 attempts to follow,
or user2 creates the link in Onenote, and user 2 attempts to follow.
