OneNote 2010; Send to OneNote Printer; ...file cannot be inserted as a printout...
Environment: Windows 7 x64 Office 2010 x86 OneNote 2010 When I try to use the Send to OneNote printer from any program, I get the warning: "The file you have selected cannot be inserted as a Printout.  There may be a problem with the file, or you may not have the right program installed.  You must first install a program that can open and print this file type, and then try again."
  • I get the "Select Location in OneNote" dialog just before getting the warning.
  • A new "Untitled page" is created in the OneNote location that I select but the page is blank.
  • I have the xps print driver installed and I can print to it and the printouts look fine.
  • I get the warning when printing from every program I have tried (Word, IE, Acrobat, Outlook, notepad).  I even tried printing from OneNote itself.
  • As far as I know, I have never been able to use the Send to OneNote printer on this setup.
Any ideas of where to go from here?

Hi

Thank you for using Microsoft Office for IT Professionals Forums.

From your description, I understand that you can’t use the Send to OneNote printer from any program. If there is any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.

If Send to OneNote printer worked fine before. We can do a System Restore to before when it was working. Then carefully update the Path.

Your understanding is correct.  I am unable to print to the Send to OneNote printer from any program.

This feature has never worked for me, so  system restore is not an option.

I have also tried removing the Send to OneNote printer and doing a repair on Office to restore the printer.  Nothing changes.

I understand that the Send to OneNote printer uses the XPS printer driver.  I am able to print to the XPS printer driver and the resulting document appears normal.

I have a co-worker who is able to use the Send to OneNote printer with no problems from his PC.

I removed the registry key and repaired Office.  Same results.

This Windows 7 box is a virtual machine (VM) that I am using as my main workstation.  I have been successful in installing Office on a Windows 7 sandbox VM on the same host machine (running parallel to my main workstation VM) and the Send to OneNote printer works fine in that VM, immediately after Office 2010 installation.  So it would appear that the issue is purely software related.

I also just did a complete uninstall/reinstall of Office and no luck.

Had the same issue. Associate the PDF file to open with the Adobe Reader instead of any other Adobe Version (if you have installed). That helped me getting this to work.

I have the same issue, but I heard that if you repair it, the program should work.  However, that is not the case.  Is there another workaround?

I am running

Windows 7 Home Premium x64

Office 2010 x32 bit

Onenote 2010

I have the same problem, but I think it has to do with the size of the file I am trying to post to One Note. I was using One Note to create a list of my music from iTunes. Yesterday I added more music to my collection and now I am getting this error. Could I have reached the limit that One Note can handle or possibly could it be a memory problem?

William:

I have just imaged a new laptop with Windows 7  Professional and office 2013. I do not use One Note yet, haven't had the time to study it. Every once in a while I get the same error as this thread, but also others about need to set up One Note and I can't do this or that. I do not want these popups from One Note but cannot figure out how to turn them off. Any help would be appreciated.

HP Folio 9470m, Windows 7 Pro, 8.00 GB / 7.87 usable, 64 bit OS, On a domain with Exchange 2013.

Thank you.
