On a Windows 2008 R2 server, where does the Windows search indexer save its files?
When I upgraded our terminal server from Office 2010 to 2013, I had to turn on the Windows Search Indexer to prevent the message 'Please wait while windows configures Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013" from coming up when Outlook was opened or someone clicked in the Outlook search box. My question is where is this index file saved? I assume it has to make one for every user that logs into that server, so what location is being filled with this data? Is it possible to turn this on through the Exchange server and not each individual terminal server? Anyone know why it wasn't necessary to have this on for Outlook 2010?

Hi,

"My question is where is this index file saved?" - the default location of the Search Index (windows.edb) file is

"%AllUsersProfile%\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Windows.edb"

Which mode did you use in Outlook 2010, Cached Exchange mode or Exchage Online mode? If it's Cached Exchange Mode, then Outlook will use the Windows Index service, instead of the Exchange Search Index service. If it's Exchange Online mode, then Outlook will use the Exchange Search Index Service.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Yes, it's safe to delete this file, but you first need to disable the Windows Indexing Service, otherwise you will get an error when you delete it.

Will you still get the pop up message after turning on this index feature? I see others reported that uninstall and reinstall Windows Search feature will finally stop this issue:

How can the index work when users roam?  Is it indexing the email on the Exchange server? What I am confused bout is why does this file need to be stored on the individual citrix server if the indexing is occurring on the exchange server (if it even is)?
