Old items in Deleted items not being deleted - Exchange 2007 managed folders
Hi I have configured Exchange 2007 managed folders to deleted old items in Deleted Items, however nothing is deleted. I do get event log entries saying that the database is getting processed. I think I have confgured everything needed (Content rule, policy, mailboxes and schedule): [PS] C:\Windows\system32>get-mailbox MailboxUser01 | fl name, man* Name : MailboxUser01 ManagedFolderMailboxPolicy : Slet emner der har ligget i Slettet post over 30 dage [PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-ManagedFolderMailboxPolicy | fl ManagedFolderLinks : {Deleted Items} MailboxPolicyFlags : 0 AdminDisplayName : ExchangeVersion : 0.1 (8.0.535.0) Name : Slet emner der har ligget i Slettet post over 30 dage DistinguishedName : CN=Slet emner der har ligget i Slettet post over 30 dage,CN=ELC Mailbox Policies,CN=ExchangeOrg,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Config uration,DC=forest,DC=root Identity : Slet emner der har ligget i Slettet post over 30 dage Guid : ef265df4-26c9-4722-b22d-594cb3dcff8c ObjectCategory : forest.root/Configuration/Schema/ms-Exch-Mailbox-Recipient-Template ObjectClass : {top, msExchRecipientTemplate, msExchMailboxRecipientTemplate} WhenChanged : 06-03-2012 12:45:34 WhenCreated : 03-11-2011 08:42:06 OriginatingServer : gc.domain.local IsValid : True [PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-ManagedFolder -Identity "Deleted Items" | fl FolderType : DeletedItems Description : ManagedDefaultFolder FolderName : DeletedItems LocalizedFolderName : {} StorageQuota : unlimited Comment : Indhold i Slettet post der har ligget i mappen i over 30 dage, slettes automatisk. I have notices that the Change field on items in Deleted Items have a timestamp less than 30 days old. Currently I don't know what updates this field. There is a lot of items with the exact same timestamp. By the way the Deleted Items in the mailboxes uses the Danish translation "Slettet post". Hope anyone can help. Thanks Regards Michael

Hi Fiona Thanks for your reply. As far as I can tell, the refered thread and the thread refered in that, is regarding Exchange 2010 Retension policy and not Managed Folders. Or does the same issue exist? Thanks Michael

I have created a case to find a solution. I have tested that if I change TriggerForRetention from WhenMoved to WhenDelivered, then items get deleted as expected. We are currently running SP3 UR1. We will try upgrading to UR6 and see if that helps. -Michael

We have now upgraded the Exchange 2007 environment with Update Rollup 6 for SP3. And the tests I did yesterday, I realized that Managed Folders uses the Modified date field when TriggerForRetention is configured to WhenMoved and that it is actually working for items with Modified date prior 30 days ago. The actual problem here, is that the items (in my case, thousands) gets updated after they are moved to deleted items. But lately most of the items has been left with the Modified date unchanged, so managed folders could actually clean up the desired configuration. Currently I suspect the following to change the modified date on items already moved to deleted items: Exchange 2007 it selfOutlook 2010Enterprise VaultDME (e-mail/calendar/contacts mobile sync solution). I know that Enterprise Vault scans the mailbox daily, but is not archiving items from deleted items. Currently my deleted items contains 255 items. Grouping them on modified date, there are only 20 differences: Count Modified date ----- ----------------- 20 12-03-2012 17:07 13 07-03-2012 17:07 7 08-03-2012 17:07 8 09-03-2012 17:07 6 13-03-2012 17:07 5 14-03-2012 17:02 28 15-03-2012 13:55 1 15-03-2012 17:01 7 16-03-2012 17:01 17 19-03-2012 17:01 15 20-03-2012 17:01 32 23-03-2012 17:02 4 22-03-2012 17:02 14 26-03-2012 15:50 73 02-04-2012 15:10 1 03-04-2012 07:15 1 03-04-2012 07:13 1 03-04-2012 07:11 1 03-04-2012 08:19 1 03-04-2012 08:32 Most of them are time stamped when not using Outlook. Any ideas what might change these items' modified date field are greatly appreciated. Thanks

Now when I look in Deleted Items, items seem only to have been modified the same day that they were moved to Deleted Items. The modified time matched when MFA is running (~ 5 PM). So the thing that actually could change the modified field on the items could in fact be MFA it self. Maybe it is tagging the items?

I can now confirm that is was the Managed Folder Agent that changes the modified date on all the items in Deleted items when activated. It's like that it is marking the items for deletion. After activation it changes the modified date on each new item on the next scheduled run. Thanks for your time Fiona.
