Offline defrag with eseutil not freeing up much space
Prior to the defrag I had a total of 84,197,328K combined total of the edb and stm priv1 files. After running the offline defrag I ended up with 80,085,008K even though we had deleted more than 12Gb in individual mailbox store files. When I run a tape on individual user mail box file sizes from the Exchange System Manager the total is only 52,219,382. Am I missing something or does Exchange really need over 28Gb of overhead.

I would venture to guess that your issue is caused by; Your deleted item retention, i.e. items that have not aged enough OR your nightly garbage collection/Online maintenance is not completing which looks at the age based upon the retention setting and then marks it as being free to reclaim with an offline defrag and most common reason this happens is because of a backup job that overlaps? Adding to what Troy has mentioned. 1.Disable backup for just 1 day. 2. Give enough window for the Online Maintainence to complete. 3. Examine your event viewr for Event 1221 , this will show the amount of freespace on this particular DB. 4. This is the space which will be reclaimed from the EDB after a offline defrag. cheers ThiyaguThiyagu | MCTS/MCITP - Exchange 2007 | MCSE 2003[Messaging] | http://www.myExchangeWorld.com. Adding to what Thiyagu said, I don't know what version of Exchange you are running, however, the default maintenance period is typically 1-5AM daily. If you open that up i.e. 12AM to 11:59AM it will finish up much faster, however, it will have some impact on your server so set it accordingly, i.e. if you are worries about performance you could temporarily set it to say 6PM to 8:30AM.
