Offline Address Book Sync Issues Exchange 2010
We recently transitioned to Exchange 2010. Users running Outlook 2010 are running fine, but users running Outlook 2007 are getting the following error in their sync issues: Microsoft Exchange offline address book Not downloading offline address book files. A server (URL) could not be located. 0x8004010F We're new to Exchnage 2010 so not really sure where to start on diagnosis of this problem. This is a transtion from Exchange 2003 so I have already moved the address lists and public folders from LDAP filters to OPATH. Everywhere that I have read so far points to a certificate error, but I'm not familiar enough with certs to proceed further. We have the exchange self issued cert providing services for SMTP, and we have a third party SSL cert from GoDaddy providing IMAP, POP, IIS, and SMTP. This server is the only 2008 server in our domain (currently at 03 functional level domain), and is not a domain controller. Exhcange 2010 is running all on one box (mailbox, CAS, Hub). The old Exchange 2003 server is still on the network and has not been uninstalled yet, however, all mailboxes are migrated to 2010 box and the NIC on the 03 box is disabled.

Hi, Can u confirm that outlook 2010 users and outlook 2007 both users are external to your network? or just outlook 2007 users are external and outlook 2010 are internal users? Seems like OL 2007 cant get the OAB URL. Can u confirm that internal and external URLs are set properly for various exchange services as suggested here Exchange 2007 Autodiscover Service Part 1 Can u also post the result of get-mailbox YourProblematicMailbox |FL OfflineAddressBook Regards, Laeeq Qazi|Team Lead(Exchange + Sharepoint + BES + DynamicsCRM) www.HostingController.com

Actually all users are internal to network...they're all either on our local network or connected via a routed VPN connection. I saw about the Exchange Autodiscover, but since all of our users are internal I didn't think this applied? All of my users are receiving this error, so i just picked one user to run this command against to show you results. Below is the output of the command you requested: OfflineAddressBook: (blank)

Hi, Set the OfflineAddressBook for this user like this set-mailbox YourProblematicMailbox -OfflineAddressBook "Default Offline Address Book" and then check it. Hopefully it will resolve ur issue. Regards,Laeeq Qazi|Team Lead(Exchange + Sharepoint + BES + DynamicsCRM) www.HostingController.com

Hi, Can u verify that u have at least one OAB in your exchange 2010 environment: plz run get-offlineAddressBook if it doesnt show any OAB then you will have to create at least one OAB using the new-offlineAddressBook command. Sure! Below is the output: Name Versions AddressLists ---- -------- ------------ Offline Address List {Version2, Version3, Version4} {\Default Global Address List} Thank you, Joe Slitzker
April 7th, 2010 9:18pm

OAB is correct, now use its name in this command: set-mailbox YourProblematicMailbox -OfflineAddressBook "Offline Address List" after it make sure your offline address list has been generated by the server. For it go to "Client Access Server\OAB" folder in Exchange installation folder which is normally C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ClientAccess\OAB and check whether it has the folder with the GUID of your oab, and als check oab.xml in this folder (folder with the name of guid of OAB). If OAB is not generated then u will have to first generate it manually in three easy steps mentioned here Manual Generation of OAB in Exchange 2007/2010 and then check OAB download in outlook again. Hope this helps u. Regards, Laeeq Qazi|Team Lead(Exchange + Sharepoint + BES + DynamicsCRM) www.HostingController.com

ok, i was just about to post that I had set his address list to "Offline Address List". The folder with the GUID does exist under client access/OAB. Checking the oab.xml I show the following: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <OAB> <OAL id='8f5ba5c4-5bef-44f3-8cfa-28967c0fe5e2' dn='/' name='\Global Address List'> <Full seq='245' ver='32' he still receivies the same sync error :(
April 7th, 2010 9:54pm

There's no GUID in the OAB field of the xml file, like there is in the OAL field. Either way, the OAL GUID doesn't match the GUID in the OAB folder, is that normal?

Hi, from the result of Test-outlookwebservices i can see that u have two CAS Url. mail.caseusa.com newman.caseusa.com while u told that u have only one ex2010 server. Can u confirm which host name, from above, represent your CAS server. and also from below which url are u able to browse in IE? it will prompt for credentials. https://newman.caseusa.com/oab/326a238a-9d04-4102-88a1-15c4d686d6b7/oab.xml https://mail.caseusa.com/oab/326a238a-9d04-4102-88a1-15c4d686d6b7/oab.xml Regards,Laeeq Qazi|Team Lead(Exchange + Sharepoint + BES + DynamicsCRM) www.HostingController.com

Correct: I have only one CAS box, the newman.caseusa.com is the internal FQDN of the server, while the mail.caseusa.com is the OWA address from outside. Unfortunately right now, our internal domain is the same as our external domain. When going to https://newman.caseusa.com/oab/326a238a-9d04-4102-88a1-15c4d686d6b7/oab.xml I am able to get to the site, but receive a certificate error first. When going to https://mail.caseusa.com/oab/326a238a-9d04-4102-88a1-15c4d686d6b7/oab.xml it works immediately without a certificate error. The actual name of the CAS box is newman.caseusa.com but because our external owa address is mail.caseusa.com we have added an internal A record that points to the IP of newman so to the end user the address is transparent whether internal or external. I hope that makes sense. The certificate we have installed from GoDaddy is for mail.caseusa.com so that the external users don't receive a certificate error.

I m waiting for Test-Email Auto Configuration result. I guess that it will try to contact https://newman.caseusa.com. Also confirm that u browsed those urls from the problematic pc, where u running ur outlook. Regards, Laeeq Qazi|Team Lead(Exchange + Sharepoint + BES + DynamicsCRM) www.HostingController.com

I ran the Test Email Auto Config, but how do I get the output in a manner in which I can copy and paste to you?
April 7th, 2010 10:15pm

U can take a screen shot, and send me at laeeq.qazi[at]gmail.com. Or can just tell us what URLs are being targeted by the Outlook in that test. Also confirm that u browsed those OAB urls from the problematic pc, where u running ur outlook. Regards, Laeeq Qazi|Team Lead(Exchange + Sharepoint + BES + DynamicsCRM) www.HostingController.com

Hi, You are always welcome. I got the EMAIL ans saw that outlook is trying for FQDN of your CAS server. As u said that when u went to "https://mail.caseusa.com/oab/326a238a-9d04-4102-88a1-15c4d686d6b7/oab.xml" you didnt get a certificate warning so we can try that url for your internal Users. So now update CAS service internal URL to point to your mail.caseusa.com host. First backup it, in case u want to revert the changes: Get-clientAccessServer | fl Name,AutoDiscoverServiceInternalUri >>c:\\CASLogs.txt Now modify CAS internal Auto Discover Service Uri: Get-clientAccessServer | Set-clientAccessServer -AutoDiscoverServiceInternalUri “https://mail.caseusa.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml” After it, now plz check. Regards, Laeeq Qazi|Team Lead(Exchange + Sharepoint + BES + DynamicsCRM) www.HostingController.com
April 7th, 2010 10:54pm

before i ran the modification, I read the caslogs that i just backed up and it's already showing the AutoDiscoverServiceInternalUri as https://mail.caseusa.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml CASLogs.txt contains: Name : NEWMANAutoDiscoverServiceInternalUri : https://mail.caseusa.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml So - I didn't make the modification change yet since it's already in place, I didn't think it would do any good, correct?

Hi, I though that u had " "newman.caseusa.com" in this attribute, my bad. Can u set it to newman.caseusa.com Get-clientAccessServer | Set-clientAccessServer -AutoDiscoverServiceInternalUri “https://newman.caseusa.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml” Normally internal users dont have problem when they put internal FQDN of CAS server in this property. I completed the changes you requested, and restarted the system attendant and File Distribution service. We are still recieving the same error and the autodiscover test failed again. I e-mailed you a screenshot. ALSO - I had to change the autodiscover back to mail.caseusa.com because after changing the uri to newman.caseusa.com (the uri that was giving me certificate errors) it cause everyone's outlook to start popping errors about an invalid certificate.

Hi, OK. As u might have seen from the "Test Email Auto Configuration" from outlook that OL is trying to get Autodiscoery settings using specific URLs like https:\\Autodiscover.caseusa.com\AutDiscover\AutoDiscover.xml etc, and fourth attemp is to look for an SRV record for your domain which points to CAS host name. So can u create an DNS SRV record in the dns zone of your domain CaseUsa.com. you will have to provide following data to create the rceord. priority = 0 weight = 0 port = 443 svr hostname = mail.CaseUsa.com Here is how to create dns srv record in ms dns http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_manually_create_SRV_records_in_DNS and more details: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940881 in the section "How to use the new DNS SRV lookup method to locate the Exchange 2007 Autodiscover service". This MS article also shows a solution to the problem quite similar to yours: Error message when Outlook synchronizes an offline address book with Exchange Server 2007 and Exchange Server 2010: "0x8004010F Regards,Laeeq Qazi|Team Lead(Exchange + Sharepoint + BES + DynamicsCRM) www.HostingController.com

Alright! Well, Laeeq, it looks like we're now functional. After adding the SVR record, there are no more errors being populated. Thank you so much for your dedication and assistance in resolving this issue. Joe.

Hi, You are welcome Joe, my pleasure to help you. When I post a reply in any forum thread then always try me best to take it to some conclusion. Most of the people do it like this here, thats why we all like this forum. Also it took so long because Auto Discovery is considered as the most complex topic when it comes to debugging an issue related to it, thats why it took so much time.
