Office 365 click-to-run updates not downloading when users inside corporate network

Hi all

We're currently rolling out Office 365 pro plus (click to run) and using the following settings in the configuration.xml file:

<Configuration>

  <Add SourcePath="" OfficeClientEdition="32" >
    <Product ID="O365ProPlusRetail">
      <Language ID="en-us" />
    </Product>
  </Add>  -->

  <Updates Enabled="TRUE" />

I have been informed that <Updates Enabled="TRUE" /> sets the client to download updates from the internet, and generally this works if a client is connected directly to the internet via home broadband etc.

The problem we are seeing is that when users are in the office, updates do not tend to work at all / or very reliably.  And if you manually initiate an update, the update dialogue gets stuck on "downloading updates".

My question is; how does the update process work?  Do i need to add some URL exceptions to our corporate proxy server and/or firewall to ensure these updates work reliably when users are in the office?

Is the update process port 80 or 443 traffic?

Thanks for any help and advice

Having the same problem - "automatic" updates work for some but not all & also experiencing same problem with manually initiated updates.  Came to this site looking for an update file that I could simply download to expedite the process & share with others - only 40 users so far with approx. 9,960 more to go once we've gotten past these glitches.  We want to give MS our $ but we can't until we get it to work consistently.  I see that the download center allows for direct download of files for lync2013  so why not offer the same for office365 lync/skype for business v. 15.0.4675.1003?

Or, would it be best to deinstall & reinstall office 365 for all those users with update problems or can we just "repair" the existing office365 & thereby get the critical update for skype for business to replace the dysfunctional lync program?

Hi 77french,

I think you need to add Office 365 URLs and IP address ranges to the exceptions, please refer to Office 365 URLs and IP address ranges.

For Office 365 ProPlus, the updates Source Port is: TCP 49152 to 65535 (Ephemeral ports), Destination Port is: TCP 80. More details can be found in the link above.

Hi DebLev22,

The information provided to 77french may also be helpful to you.

In addition, you may refer to this article: Choose how to apply updates to Office 365 ProPlus.

As introduced in the article, there are three ways that admins typically apply updates for Office 365 ProPlus:

  • Automatically from the Internet

  • Automatically from an on-premises location

  • By installing an updated version of Office 365 ProPlus

It seems you can choose the third method for your users, which gives you the most control among three three ways.
