Office 2013 supports opening .eml file like office 2010?

Hi,

I have seen one feature in office 2010 to open .eml file.

Is it continued by microsoft in next releases like office 2013?

And how much possibility to stop this feature in next releases of office?

Some of the decision for our product depends on that.

Thanks,

Jay.

Hi,

Yes, we can directly open .eml file with Outlook 2013.

We will consider whether to stop this feature in next releases accoring to our customers' demands.

Thanks,

Hi Steve,

Sorry for delay,

Thanks for your reply is very useful to us.

One more question regarding this .eml file support from office outlook.

Upgraded office outlook 2003 and office 2007 also supports open .eml file.

Is it possible to know that outlook supports eml opening without opening eml file with outlook?

I mean ,Can we detect it from any setting file or from registry that Office 2003/2007/2010 supports eml

opening?

OR

Can we try to open eml file in silent mode with some switch,As if outlook not supports it ,

Outlook will give an error message box.

Thanks,

Jay.

Hi Don,

I have already seen this URL,

But on the machine where office 2007 installed and upgraded.

And.eml file opening with office outlook exe.

This registry setting "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft Internet Mail Message\shell\open\command" showing

Path of msimn.exe (Outlook express) and not for outlook.exe.So We cant identify with this setting.

Thanks,

Jay.

Path of msimn.exe (Outlook express) and not for outlook.exe.

Hmm,

I just checked another machine (win7 with OFF2010)
This machine doesn't have "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft Internet Mail Message"....

It has:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.eml\OpenWithProgids [REG_SZ=Outlook.File.eml.14]
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Outlook.File.eml.14\shell\Open\command [REG_SZ=C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~4\Office14\OUTLOOK.EXE /eml "%1"]

I guess the machine you checked, which does have OE msimn.exe, is an WinXP machine?

Don,

You are correct its windows xp machine.

But I haven't found anything in registry which shows that out outlook supports .eml file opening.

I need to identify it without opening it or with silent opening.

We can't check "OpenWithProgids" as it can be assign to another application like notepad. But program can open eml file with outlook.exe with command line.

Thanks,

Jay.

it's possible that a per-user registry key for file association may have been stored, check:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.eml\OpenWithProgids

(depending on the Windows version, and what settings have been created for HKLM or by various users in each user's own HKCU, there are many places to check for this outcome :(

Hi Don,

This will not work in my case as eml file default open in notepad,

If I forcefully open eml file through my program with shellexecute(outlook.exe) it

will open in outlook.exe.
