Office 2013 crashes when trying to access MS query

Hi,

I am having a problem with Microsoft Excel 2013 (32bit) running on my Windows 7 64bit machine. I cannot get data from a Microsoft query. When I click on this button it instantly freezes and hangs with the message "Waiting for data to be returned from microsoft query" in the status bar.

Please could someone help, this has happened before, randomly sorted itself and now, once again stopped working!

I have checked all my ODBC data sources (from the windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe) that they have all the correct paths. Really is frustrating a puzzling.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just to make sure I understand this problem, when you click  Data->From Other Sources->From Microsoft Query, excel hangs with the message. If so, it might be a memory issue, since you said it has happened before and sorted itself, Try to start Task Manager to check if you got any suspicious processes.

Also have you tried to import data by using OLE DB? e.g. Data->From Other Sources->From SQL Server.
should it be works fine?

You understand correctly.

I have checked task manager no suspicious processes and plenty of memory left.

The importing data by OLE DB works fine. Just the one I know how to use and the one that has worked previously not working. (From Microsoft Query)

Any other ideas??

Hi,

Thanks for the information you provided.
It is very strange that you can't even open the MS query window when you click the button 'From Microsoft Query'. You might need to repair your office program.
If I misunderstand you, this issue occurs when you click the button 'Return Data to Microsoft Excel' ,then you can try to create a query in MS query firstly and save it. next time when you open MS Query window, you can select the query instead of the odbc connection.

In addition, if you have resolved this issue by yourself, You can share you experience with us,Thanks.

I am having this exact same problem. I can't  even get the MS Query window to come up.It just hangs saying it is Waiting for Data when I select the button 'From Microsoft Query' button.

Can anyone else shed some light on this problem?

Thanks,

I have a user also experiencing this problem, though it's worth mentioning I'm running against an Oracle data source instead.

Testing the connection in ODBC admin works fine.  The workstation can see the database server, and I can connect to it and query with other tools.  If I try to import data directly through Excel (whether using an existing or new query) it freezes when MS Query loads.  If I try to create a new query in MS Query that I can then import as a separate step, it will allow me to connect to the data source and then freeze MS Query.

Microsoft query has stopped working is the error message that we get on a number of machines. This only started when we installed office 365 plus months ago. Worked fine for a while then when first crash that's it. Only solution is to reformat the workstations and re-install the office 365 application with all other programmes. Interesting thing is that msqry32.exe application works when run from the office 15 root folder but not from data>from other sources>microsoft query.  So problem/issue is when msquery is called from other sources in the data menu in excel 2013
