Office 2010 and Exchange Server 2003 Archiving Policies
Hello Everyone, I have a question that I think I know the answer to, but would like confirmation from the experts here-abouts. We have an Exchange 2003 Server that I have setup policies on to defined archive settings. Two of our newest computers are running Office 2010. These machines are NOT pickingup the archive settings from the group policy. Is this just because our client and server versions are too far apart, or should this work? Relevant facts: - Exchange Server 2003 - Windows Standard 2003 - Client are Windows 7 64-bit boxes running Office 2010 If anyone else has run into this and either has a fix and/or can confirm whether it should work, let me know. Thanks, Jeff

Office Group Policy is very specific. You will need the Office 2010 Group Policy extensions. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

Hi Jeff, As far as I know, users can no longer deploy AutoArchive-based retention settings through Outlook 2010 by using Group Policy. Users who retention policies are encouraged to explore the Messaging Records Management(MRM) features in Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2010. You can know more detail from this document: Changes in Outlook 2010 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179110.aspx Thanks, Evan Liu TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Thanks Evan, that would explain why I was having so much trouble. I'll have to look into this Messaging Records Managment (MRM) feature. Jeff

Thanks Evan, that would explain why I was having so much trouble. I've just looked into this Messaging Records Managment (MRM) feature. It looks like this is Exchange 2007 and higher. While we are running Outlook 2010, we are only on Exchange 2003. Do you know if this leaves me in limbo? I can neither enforce auto-archive settings or use the MRM it appears. Our main goal rather than worrying about message retention due to legal this-and-that, is to keep the mailboxes smaller due to our online backup service which we pay per GB. Since we have upgraded some workstations to office 2010, we have noticed this. I can think of three options. If anyone has any other ideas, I would appreciate the feedback. Don't forget though that our goal is keeping the main Exchange server e-mail databases small rather than a need for comprehensive retension and archiving. 1) Upgrade to Exchange 2007 or 2010 and use the MRM feature 2) Since the archive settings still exist in Outlook 2010, figure out the registry setting to force it on and push that out 3) Manually configure the outlook auto-archive settings on any Office 2010 machine :..( <--- This idea makes me cry :D Also, I have one last silly question. Where can I get the server-side extensions for Office 2010? I searched the internet, but could not find much other than references to server-side extensions. The actual file is somewhat elusive. Thanks, Jeff
