Office365 and Exchange 2013 Management Tools

We're on Office365-D/Exchange2013 and I would like to use the Powershell Snapin for Exchange 2013. Can I install them on my machine without having the Exchange 2013 Schema installed yet? We still have the Exchange 2003 Schema installed but moved when I was laying out the project for Exchange 2007.

We have 4 Bridgehead servers still running because of applications that needed to use LDAP that is provided by Exchange. Because of this I figure the answer is no but asking anyway.

We will upgrade to E14/E15 by the middle of August, but I would like to install the snapin now so I can use the cmdlets that comes with it to help with another project.

Thanks,

Hybrid or no hybrid?  All mailboxes are in Office 365?  Are you using DirSync, and if so, which tool?

Exchange 2013 uses remote PowerShell.  There isn't a snap-in per se.  But I'm confused by your statements, are you still hosting mailboxes on Exchange 2003?  If so, it's not supported to manage them with any other tools but the Exchange 2003 System Manager.

I apologize, Office365-D is Dedicated, we are not Multi-tenet or Hybrid. We did not decommission the on-prem Exchange 2003 servers because we have some applications that require the LDAP services Exchange can provide for routing SMTP to the Managed system. We have Windows 2008R2 servers we use for SMTP but the LDAP services do not function that great on these. We have no mailboxes on the Exchange servers, only used for routing email.

We are not running DirSyc because the apps and printers sending to them use SG's for the SMTPs. We were going to upgrade these years ago but because of other projects it was pushed back until now with the EOL for Win2003 we are going to be upgrading the servers to Exchange 2013 through Exchange 2010 first. The plan is to have the first E15 server configured and tested before the end of the month then build the rest of the servers and decommission the Exchange 2003 servers.

The reason for the original post is we would like to load the PowerShell Exchange 2013 Module but the prerequisites listed on the Download page shows it requires the Exchange 2013 Management Tools.

Thanks for your reply!

I've never known Exchange 2003 to provide LDAP services.  Domain controllers answer LDAP queries.

I do not understand this statement, "We are not running DirSyc because the apps and printers sending to them use SG's for the SMTPs."  SGs are storage groups?

I don't understand what benefit you would receive from installing Exchange 2013.  I'm sorry, but you can't install Exchange 2013 without updating your schema and Active Directory.  There is no supported PowerShell module for Exchange 2013.  Exchange 2013's shell commands are provided by the server using remote PowerShell.
