OWA works but ActiveSync/OMA doesn't on Exchange 2003
Running a front-end / back-end setup both with W2K3 and Exchange 2003 SP2. The front-end server was introduced as we were originally having issues getting OMA/ActiveSync to work with OWA, unfortunately I'm still having the same issues getting this to work. SSL and FBA are enabled on the front-end server with a DigiCert UC SSL cert, and on the back-end I have this disabled and the cert has been removed. OWA works fine internally and externally (via HTTPS on /exchange), however trying to browse to https ://companyname/oma will prompt me for authentication and then display "A System error has occurred while processing your request"- I also receive "MsExchangeOMA 1503" error in Event Log. Via iPhone or Android it seems to authenticate OK but when trying to connect it just says 'Can't connect to server' When testing via testexchangeconnectivity .com - I receive error "Exchange ActiveSync returned an HTTP 500 response." - the fixes listed in KB article are not really relevant to fe/be setup and was originally attempted before we introduced the front-end server anyway. I have tried a variety of fixes posted on the net - rebuilding virtual directories in IIS, adjusting permissions in IIS/ESM, updating and restarting servers, but nothing has given me any luck yet. Cheers!!

Exchange Server ActiveSync and Exchange Outlook Mobile Access (OMA) use the /Exchange virtual directory to access OWA templates and Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV) on the Exchange back-end server. This is where the mailbox of the user is located. Server ActiveSync and OMA cannot access this virtual directory if one of the following conditions is true: The /Exchange virtual directory on an Exchange back-end server is configured to require Secure Socket Layer (SSL).Forms-based authentication is enabled. Please refer to KB330463, KB817379 and KB883380. Hope helps.Noya Lau TechNet Community Support
