OWA is very slow for some users
Hi Our topology is this: Users > Load Balancer > CAS1/CAS2/CAS3 > MBX1/MBX2/MBX3/MBX4/MBX5 All Exchange servers are 2007 SP2 We have a lot of users who use OWA and access via https://webmail.domain.com We have an issue where OWA for some users is slow. When tested on full PC's, their Outlook is fine. Does anyone know of any recommended Perfmon counters/troubleshooting steps to run. Looks like the problem is on one CAS server. The hardware performance of the server seems ok.

OWA slowness is rarely a performance issue and mostly configuration issue, patch issue, or similar. Can you confirm that this CAS server has similar DNS settings as other CAS servers and has no issues getting to the same DCs as the other CAS servers? Thanks James. I'm not entirely sure it's the CAS server that's at fault, it could be networking etc. I was after some sort of Perfmon counters to show whether there really was a delay on the CAS server or not? We haven't made any change on the CAS's at all over the last few weeks.

I would start out running logparser on your IIS logfiles and note the time-taken field to verify if the delay is occuring, what time, what users this is happening for and try to determine some consistent pattern. If you google logparser time-taken there are many syntax examples. The only sure way to know is to attach an IIS debuger to trigger for example if time-taken is greater than say 10seconds or other trigger criteria. The debug will show what dll, or call was the culprit, if it's getting a timeout to a DC, but takes some time and debugging skills. Also start with the basics of running Exchange Best Practice Analyzer on all the CAS to ensure they are consistent and make sure patches are consistent, TCP\IP settings are consistent to include the stack and each adaptor settings.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Hi Pancamo, How about the issue? Do all the users in the same environment? As per my experience, this issue also can be occurred by other reasons (eg: Network connection, Brower). If you have tested in the same environment, please use Exbpa to do a health check for the Exchange Server. If not, I would like to suggest you have a test in the same environment, and check if this issue on the user who doesn’t have this problem before.
