OWA 2003 500 error with attachments over 1mb
Here's the background. We've got a 4 node clustered exchange 2003, with 1 front end OWA. We haven't had any changes in months, that I am aware of. This week, users on one of the cluster back ends (call it BE1) get a 500 internal server error if they try to use OWA to send an email over 1mb. Any attachment that's say, 300k, attaches from OWA and emails just fine. Users on the other 2 backends (BE2 and BE3) can send big attachments just fine. Other details, we're running Symantec MSME 6.0.9.286 and have everything running Windows 2003 SP2 including DC's.

Hi, First please try to use URL: Http://Backend1/Exchange to access OWA and then test the issue. If we cannot send attachment over 1MB, then I think we need to follow the article below to check the message size limitation.  The global setting  The Exchange SMTP connector  The SMTP Virtual Server  The user mailbox setting How to set size limits for messages in Exchange Server http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322679 More related information to share with you: You receive a "This item exceeds the maximum size defined for this folder" error message when you use OWA to post an item that has an attachment to a public folder in Exchange Server 2003 and in Exchange 2000 Server http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304307 Besides, please check Symantec settings(filter settings) on Backend1,including quarantine. It's not a send limit issue. That's set at 50mb and besides, that doesn't cause a 500 internal server error when you hit attach in OWA. It's also not related to public folders, this is when trying to attach something to a regular email. And I had already tested it against the backend node, it is definately the backend server's issue.

Hi, Then have you check the message size limitation settings? Besides, please try to use outlook to send email with attachment (over 1mb) to test the issue. If the issue do not occur to outlook user, then I recommend you to re-create OWA virtual directory. How to reset the default virtual directories that are required to provide Outlook Web Access, Exchange ActiveSync, and Outlook Mobile Access services in Exchange Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883380 Regards, Xiu
