OICE_15_974FA576_32C1D314_*** folders under users %AppData% - what is it?!

Hi,
A lot of our users have these types of folders in their AppData catalog, next to Roaming, Local and LocalLow.
They contain at least one Office file (xlsx, pptx, docx etc.).

Are they auto-recovered Office files? Or are they related to Microsoft Office Isolated Conversion Environment (MOICE)?
Can't really find any information regarding these folders or why they are located directly in the %AppData% catalog.

I want them gone and/or move their default location as this is a Citrix environment with roaming profiles.

Using Office 2013 ProPlus with Win2k8R2 and Citrix XenApp 6.5.

Hi,

The Microsoft Office Isolated Conversion Environment (MOICE) feature that is added to the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats is used to more securely open Word, Excel, and PowerPoint binary format files.

Please follow the Enable or Disable MOICE steps to disable the feature in this article.

To have us enable or disable MOICE for all supported document formats for you, go to the "Fix it for me"  section. To enable or disable MOICE individually for each document format that is supported, you must run the appropriate command listed in the  "Let me fix it myself" section.

let me know the result, thank you.

Hi Chloe,

That is not really an answer for my question.

We are using Office 2013!

I don't want to disable MOICE (if that is still present in Office 2013, can't find any info about it at all), I want the "OICE_15..." folders that are automatically created in the root of the %AppData% folder to be moved to i.e. AppData/Local where they will be deleted at logoff (I have excluded AppData/Local from roaming).

Hi,

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

First I'd like to explain the first reply of mine. From the first post of yours, my understanding was that you just wanted to disable the usage of MOICE. Though the version is different, the commands in "Let me fix it myself" section are applicable to Office 2013 which I've tested. But the file type should be modified to Office 2013 format, like: ASSOC .docx=oice.word.document. I should be more specific.

I researched yesterday and still coundn't find much information about it. I also did some test and found the folder: C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Packages\oice_15_974fa576_32c1d314_1bbf. But there were not much files under this folder.

For your request in your latest reply, I havent found a way to archive it yet.

I will need more time to research. If its urgent, I suggest you to contact Microsoft Premier Support. Meanwhile, I will keep checking from my side and keep you posted if I found anything.

Hi Chloe,

No problem, I appreciate your help!

Surely someone at Microsoft must know why these folders are created, and why they are created in the root of the AppData folder?! The location of the files are what bugs me, it doesn't make any sense.

Per-Henrik

Hi,

As confirmed, MOICE was developed for Office 2003 and Windows XP user to enhance security. This feature has been replace by Protected View in later versions and is not an integration feature in Office 2013. So its not necessary to keep it.

And the default path of the OICE_PID is written in hard code, so theres no way to change it.

Hope above information is useful for you.

Following information quote from this article is FYI.

Once MOICE has been installed on a computer, when you double click a file with one of the extensions supported by MOICE, MOICE is automatically run to convert

the file. The result file is created by MOICE in the "%TEMP%" directory (i.e. " C:Documents and Settings{username}Local SettingsTemp") and this file is then opened

by the appropriate Office application.

This behaviour is quite disturbing if you modify this file, because when you save it you must move it from the "%TEMP%" folder to a more appropriate location. It is

also highly suggested to manually delete the original file. If you don't and choose to keep the ".doc" and ".docx" files (let suppose you work on a Word document) both

in the same directory, there is actually a risk that you later edit the old ".doc" file instead of the new ".docx" file (which is the only one that includes the changes you

made in the document).

Let me know if you have further request, thank you.
