ODBC Driver List - How To Add A New ODBC Driver To Visio 2007

Hoping that this has not changed between versions.

How do you add to the list of installed Visio drivers in Visio 2007?

At present selecting "ODBC Generic Driver" and then go on to select the actual driver by clicking the new button.

Reverse engineering is fine except it complains about the 'generic' driver and will not show me views.

The driver I want to add to Visio is for Postgresql 9.3 and it is installed on the system in both 32 and 64 bit versions.

Thanks for any assistance.

Hi,

According to your description, my understanding is that you want to use Reverse engineering feature of Visio 2007 database template with Postgresql 9.3. If yes, please do is to install the PostgreSQL ODBC driver

Thank you for responding.  I did get that far.  I just do not understand why the native Postgres driver does not show up in the first drop down box.

The postgres driver is installed but does not show up in the Visio "first list" of connection choices forcing me to use the ODBC Generic driver when I would most likely have better access with the PostgreSQL driver direct.

Visio then issues an error message about using the generic driver but offers no method of adding it for selection (in the first drop down box).

What I am not clear on is if this is the intended behavior or if there is a tweak to the registry that has to be done to make the driver visible.

Hi,

I can understand your requirement, but the driver of Postgresql 9.3 is provided by Postgresql, not a build-in driver. We can't add the driver to the first drop down list and it'll display in the sub box.

Hope it's helpful.

George,

Thanks for your prompt response.  Here is a copy of the error message that gave rise to the consideration that the PostgreSQL driver was not installed properly in Visio 2007.

"Warning!  You are using a Visio Generic Driver to connect with a PostgreSQL DBMS datasource.  By using an incompatible driver it is possible that the DDL script generated or the update of the database will be incompatible with the target DMBS."

I have been using Visio since the first version came out.  Any plans to correct this?

Hi,

I found the similar issue between Visio 2007 and SQL server 2008. This issue might be due to the incompatible driver.

https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/365757/sql-server-2008-driver-for-visio-2007

Thus, I recommend you connect the supporter of PostgreSql and ask for the appropriate driver.

PS: We also can try the lower version of PostgreSql or Visio 2010 pro (Visio 2013 removed the Reverse engineering)

George,

To summarize the comments on the link you sent:  it goes without saying that dropping functionally forces long term customers to elect to discontinue upgrading product.   The Visio team could address this.  ODBC drivers are generic in their nature.   Has this problem been investigated by the Visio Team?

Has MS considered that it is acceptable to deliver functionality with core support for basic data types without attempting to go outside of the ODBC standards?

FYI connected it to TOAD and it works fine. This establishes that the driver is fine.

So I am left to make the decision to discontinue the standard of Visio in our organization due to diminishing functionality.  I am sorely disappointed.  This is not the first MS product I have been forced to retire.  I have been an avid user of Visio since Version 1.  It goes without saying that addressing reported issues leads to retention of customer base.
