OAB and Exchange 2003
Hi. Running Exchange 2003 Enterprise. Everytime a user from Outlook "Downloads Address Book" on the server, we get entries of users that are no longer with the company. The actual user account and mailbox of those users are not on the AD, and the preview of the Address Book on the server is correct. When we take Outlook off "cached mode" the Address Book is fine. The problem only appears when we are in "cached mode" and Downloading a copy of the Offline Address Book from the server. We have both rebuilt the Offline Address Book on the server and removed the OAB files off the local computers, but still same issue. Sounds like the Offine Address Book on the server is bad/corrupt. Since we've rebuilt it numerous times with no success in fixing the issue, does that mean the next logical step is to "create" a new Offline Address Book on the server and delete the existing one? If so, please advise on the step-by-step instructions, and I hope it is transparent to the users and Outlook. I've never had to do this before. Thanks, ~m

Run oabinteg and see if those users are in the OAB file and getting processed. oabinteg.exe /s:<servername> /l /t:getabinfo_v4 http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/oabinteg/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=726 James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Downloaded and executed the said command directly from the mail server, then I searched the output file for old users but there were no matches. Any other ideas I can try? Thanks. ~m

You mentioned that you redownload the OAB after deleting the local oab files. Can you do another test on another computer, create a new Outlook profile in cached mode and download the OAB. I think you're still running into some stale OAB files locally.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

okay, here's the latest update: 1. went to another workstation, created a new outlook profile in cached mode and downloaded the OAB. same result = old users that are no longer on the AD. 99% of the users are running window xp sp2 with outlook 2007. 2. another thing worth noting, i have other computers that seem to be displaying the "online address book" for lack of a better term. It correct displays the users. both computers have outlook in cached mode. one computer is xp sp2 with outlook 2003, while the other is windows 7 pro with outlook 2007. here's the kicker: in the Sync issues folder of Outlook on both workstations, it shows an error message in red: Microsoft Exchange offline address book 0x80040119, AND neither workstations have OAB files when you search for them...its as if its actually working in *non* cached mode even though it is configured in cache mode. This is only with respect to the Address Book, because I do see the emails, contacts, calendars, notes, etc...frequently showing that it is updating/syching with the server. the workstations that have old users in their OAB do not have any items in their Sync Issues folder and they do have OAB files. ~m

When in cached mode you can do a reg hack below for Outlook to use online GAL. Let me do some more research on why your OAB is still showing stale users. Thanks for the help. In the meantime, the registry entry is not on any of my following configurations: Outlook 2007 on Windows 7 Pro (There is no "Cached Mode") Outlook 2007 on Windows XP (There is no "Cached Mode") Outlook 2003 on Windows XP (There is no "Outlook") And, I confirmed that all 3 Outlooks are in cached mode. Here's some added info...Yesterday, I tried to re-create on of the old users on our AD with a mailbox. It would not let me. Gave the following Microsoft Active Directory - Exchange Extension error: This e-mail address already exists in this organization. ID no: c10312e7 Microsoft Active Directory - Exchange Extension I am 100% sure that user is no longer in our AD, I also tried two other old users that also showed up in the Offline Address Book and same error. Basically, the AD/Exchange still think the old user/mailbox exist, but it is no where to be found in either Active Directory Users and Computers or in Exchange System Manager. ~m

That would explain it, you need to do some diagnostics on your DC, possible running into some replication issues or one of your FSMO role servers are having some issues. Run dcdiag /v against your DCs and report any errors.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

I believe you're running into an old issue I blogged about in 2006 which is why I wanted to know the OS and SP level. In this instance the Domain Controller has received a RID Pool from the RID master. However, the Domain Controller is unable to allocate rids to new objects. Therefore, creating new objects fail. The issue is when a pre windows server 2003 SP1 DC attempts to get a rid pool from a windows server 2003 SP1 RID master. Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 added hard-coded prefixes to Active Directory which are not outbound replicated to partner domain controllers under normal circumstances. While inconsistent prefixes between replication partners do not interfere with Active Directory replication, RID pool request by pre-Service Pack 1 computers are rejected when they detect SP 1 prefixes in local thread state which has been obtained from Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 RID Masters. Domain Controller Reports Event 16650 and Subsequently Produces “No RIDS Allocated” http://msexchangetips.blogspot.com/2006/07/domain-controller-reports-event-16650.htmlJames Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Hi James, Thank you, I read you 2006 Blog. With regards to Option 2, please confirm...I thought AZSERVER02 is RID Master? As shown on my prior post, when I ran dcdiag /test:ridmanager /v on the old domain server of AZSERVER02.azoffmusic.local that it states that azserver02.azoffmusic.local is the RID Manager. Not posted, but when I ran dcdiag /test:ridmanager /v on my 3 DCs on my current domain that it states azdc01.azoffnetwork.com is the RID Manager. Please advise how I would make AZSERVER02.azoffmusic.local the RID Manager if it is already. Thanks. Manny
February 21st, 2011 3:03am

To determine which domain controller is the RID master: Open Active Directory Users and Computers. To open Active Directory Users and Computers, click Start. In Start Search, type dsa.msc, and then press ENTER. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue. In the console tree, right-click the domain object, and then click Operations Masters. On the RID tab, note the name of the computer that is identified as the Operations master. Since AZSERVER02 is a windows 2000 box it can't get a RID pool by design from a Windows 2003 SP1 server. You can transfer the RID manager to AZSERVER02 or you have to make some schema changes. I would go down the route of temporarily setting AZSERVER02 as the RID manager so it's functioning normal. Then plan to upgrade this box to at least Windows 2003 SP3. azserver02.azoffmusic.local is the RID Master of azoffmusic.local azdc01.azoffnetwork.com is the RID Master of azoffnetwork.com azoffmusic.local and azoffnetwork.com are trusted domains. Also, if I want to change the RID Master, the only choice given for azoffnetwork.com is azdc02.azoffnetwork.com, and for azoffmusic.local the only choice is the current server of azserver02.azoffmusic.local. 1. It does not even seem that I can temporarily set azserver02 as the RID Manager of the domain azoffnetwork.com??? Thoughts? 2. Is it not recommended to first upgrade the 2000 box to 2003 SP2 to match my other DCs? 3. If I first upgrade azserver02 to 2003 SP2, do I still need to still set it temporarily as the RID Master or will everything work because they are all the Same OS version? Thanks.
February 21st, 2011 11:45pm

Ok you have two domains, the RID master is a domain role, so you will have one RID master in each domain. So to confirm azserver02.azoffmusic.local is the RID master for domain azoffmusicl.local. There is no other DCs in this domain correct? Did this domain always only have this one DC? If that is the case, we can rule out replication issues. The issue is local to the box perhaps the AD database itself. Did you already try rebooting azserver02 first?James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

I rebooted, but same issue. Currently there is only azserver02.azoffmusic.local as the DC on that domain, and as a matter of fact it is the only computer on that domain. This was a little bit before my time with the company, but from what I was told, they "de-comissioned" all IP devices on the old azoffmusic.local domain except azserver02 and all new servers went to the azoffnetwork.com domain, and all existing workstations were joined to the new domain. At one time, I know there was an azserver01.azoffmusic.local DC but once it was removed of all its roles, it was then de-commissioned and removed from the network. ~m

Any reason why that domain is still alive? Your options. 1. Fix the RID issue. It could be caused by many reasons. If you're not using this domain and plan to decomission then don't invest the time. 2. Have your Exchange server exclude azserver02, Rebuild the OAB, then verify on an affected client of stale users are still showing up Set-ExchangeServer -Identity myexserver -StaticExcludedDomainControllers azserver02James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Did not find reference to azserver02. Went to Exchange System Manager > right click Exchange Server Name > selected Properties > Directory Access tab. I did this for both my back-end and front-end Exchange 2003 server. The only server entries there are of two of my current DCs: AZDC01 and AZDC02. Did I miss something? To go back to your earlier question regarding azserver02, "any reason why that domain is still alive?"... Again this was before my time with the company, but from what I've been told there might still be some roles necessary between the two domains. Never got clarification on that as all the former IT personnel are gone and unavailable. So, we just kept it. ~m

Need to back track. An old user is showing up on domain. When you're doing a search this old domain user john doe belongs to this domain correct? If so it just needs to be deleted. Now if you're doing a search on the old DC for john doe but he belongs to the new domain and shows up then that's a problem and need to further troubleshoot DC issues. I think we went over our heads, I don't think there is any replication issues since your output did not show it. I think you just didn't delete the stale users from the old domain.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

When I do the custom search for "proxyaddresses=smtp:john.doe@azoffmusic.com" from the current DCs (azdc01, azdc02 or azdc03), it finds nothing. When I do the same search from the old DC (azserver02), it returns the following: Name: John Doe (a 2nd search for another old user call it Jane Doe) Type: User (Type for Jane Doe is also User) Description: Migration Done (Description for Jane Doe is blank) When I right click the old user and select Delete, I get the following error - Active Directory: Windows cannot delete object John Doe because: Directory object not found. When I right click the old user and select Rename, I get the following error - Active Directory: Windows cannot access object LDAP://azoffmusic.local/CN=John Doe, OU=Users, OU=Azoffnetwork,DC=azoffnetwork,DC=com because: Directory object not found. The object may have been deleted by another administrator in this enterprise. I can tell you that John Doe was a user at one time, and I remember deleting his account from one of the current DCs, but I do not know why he appears on a search from the old DC azerver02 and why they show up in my OAB. Additionally, I ran ADUC from azserver02 and under the domain azoffmusic.local > Microsoft Exchange system Objects > there is an object: Name: Offline Address Book - first administrative group Type: Public Folder Description: blank Exchange Alias: Offline Address Book - first administrative group Exchange Mailbox Store: CN=Public Folders,CN=Folder Hierarchies,CN=first administrative group,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=AZOFFMUSIC,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=azoffmusic,DC=local Now when I look at the ADUC for current DCs azdc01.azoffnetwork.com, there is no Offline Address Book - first administrative group object within the Microsoft Exchange System Object folder...not sure if this helps, but just giving as much info as possible in an effort to resolve this issue. Thanks again! ~m

Oh yeah forgot you were running into the delete issue. The error you're running into is from some inconsistency with the AD database and the AD directory. I've seen similar a while back when a VM DC was brought back to life after it crashed from a client. Do you see the object in adsiedit if so try deleting it from there. 1. Start, run type adsiedit.msc 2. Navigate to the domain parition and OU, find the user and deleteJames Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com
