OAB Not Updating on Cached Mode Outlook Clients
I am having a problem getting the most up-to-date OAB to Outlook 2003/2007/2010 clients that connect to our Exchange 2010 server in cached mode. The clients that connect directly (not using cached mode) do not have the issue. I've read numerous posts here and elsewhere on the internet. These discussed deleting the local client copy of the OAB, recreating it on the server, restarting the Exchange File Distribution service, etc. None of these steps worked. This is getting frustrating for our users as a number of changes are not appearing correctly (new staff, marriages/name changes, etc.). Our server is Exchange 2010 SP1, all updates applied, running on Server 2008 R2 also fully patched. I would sincerely appreciate any help. I've done everything that I've read about, to no avail. Thank you in advance. If I've left out any details please feel free to ask for further information.

Can you post the following five things: 1) Get-OABVirtualDirectory | fl 2) Crtl-rightclick the outlook icon in your system tray, select Test Email AutoConfiguration, uncheck the two Guessmart box and post the results. 3) Verify that Web Distribution is enabled for the OAB (Organization -> Mailbox node) and make sure your CAS server is listed as a distribution point 4) Do you have redirection set on the Default Web Site? If so, can you double check the redirection settings on the OAB virtual directory? 5) What errors are you getting in the Sync Issues folder in Outlook?Tim Harrington - Catapult Systems - http://HowDoUC.blogspot.com

Hello Tim, Thank you for the reply. 1) I couldn't find how to copy the results. I did see that the OAB URL was located. I can send you a screenshot if that helps. 2) I couldn't find how to copy the results. I did see that the OAB URL was located. I can send you a screenshot if that helps. 3) Web distribution is enabled (so is Public Folder). The CAS is verified as the distribution point. 4) Redirection is not set on the Default Web Site. 5) no errors in the Sync Issues folder in Outlook I do receive an error on the Exch server when I try to update the OAB. It is noted in the application log (XXX = redacted information): OABGen encountered error 80004005 while cleaning the offline address list public folders under /o=XXX/cn=addrlists/cn=oabs/cn=Default Offline Address Book. Please make sure the public folder database is mounted and replicas exist of the offline address list folders. No offline address lists have been generated. Please check the event log for more information.

Hi Roger, From your last post, you seem to have activated PF distribution of your OAB. since you do have Outllok 2003 clients, you will need to create the store in Exchange. If you do not have Outlook 2003 clients, you can disable the PF distribution of the OAB MArtin

Hi, For the Outlook 2003, it uses the Public Folder to get the OAB. This is different from Outlook 2007/Outlook 2010 which uses the OAB URL to download the OAB from the CAS. Based on the error, that seems the Public Folder Replica has the issue. Could you see the replicas for the OAB under Offline Address List in Public Folder? Thanks AllenAllen Song

Allen, Thank you for the response. I am certainly not an Exchange expert, so please forgive me if my responses are elementary. Our company's IT staff is stretched extremely thin, so we have little time to really specialize in any given area. I checked the PFs (System Public Folders/Offline Address Book), and found the following items: OAB Version 2, OAB Version 3a, OAB Version 4. I am still getting the error I noted earlier (cleaning the offline address list) when I try to update it manually. This problem continues to grow as we make changes to recipients and DLs. Most of our organization's users are on cached mode via Outlook 03. Thank you in advance for your time. -Roger

Hi, We're also seeing this. The configuration all looks good in Exchange 2010 and at the Outlook client end. Outlook 2007 can see the GAL in cached and non cached mode. Outlook 2010 can only see the GAL in non-cached mode. Is this some sort of bug in Outlook 2010? Cheers, Rob

Hello Rob, Thank you for taking the time to reply. Unfortunately the error is not on the client side, it exists on the server. I am not even able to manually re-generate the OAB (see the errors I noted above). I am hoping someone from MS can look closer into this one. We still have not had any successful updates for several months.

Hi, Now I suggest you create a new OAB and associated with the Mailbox Database, and enable Public Folder Distribution, update the new OAB and check this issue. Thanks AllenAllen Song

Allen, Thank you for the reply. I created a new OAB and enabled Public Folder Distribution. I then tried to update it. When I checked the event log, I received the following errors: "OABGen encountered error 80040115 while initializing the offline address book generation process. No offline address books have been generated. Check the event log for more information." "OABGen encountered error 80040115 (internal ID 50004b0) accessing Active Directory DC1 for '\OAB" Any information/help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. -Roger

The move was successful, but I am still unable to re-generate the OAB. I still receive the error "OABGen encountered error 80040115 while initializing the offline address book generation process. No offline address books have been generated. Check the event log for more information."
