Nt Backup utility
Hi - I had the ntbackup utility setup before, now I have to set it up again however, when I went through the wizard to setup a backup, I don't see the exchange database. Do I have to make the first storage group shareable in order to access it for backup? When I choose the Exchange server I don't see the database. I am using the ntbackup utility on my domain controller. Please advise. Thanks, Peggy

If I remember correctly, when you install Exchange on Win2000 or 2003 (or maybe you still have NT4?), it replaces NTBackup with a modified version. This means that you will only see the Information Stores in NTBackup if you use the instance that is actually on the Exchange Server. Unless you are saying that you have been able to do this from a non-Exchange server in the past? You could also install just the Exchange System Manager on the DC to get the enhanced NTBackup. I believe it is also possible by copying the file from the CD, and adding a registry key.Outlook Web Access For PDA , OWA For WAP www.owa-pda.com email a@t leederbyshire d.0.t c.0.m

its better to run ntbackup on exchange server as it will not overburden your network as well as it will be more speedy and reliable. Otherwise you need to install exchange tools (system manager / management tools) on DC.Sajjad

I was wrong.. the backup is running on the Exchange server. I have Exchange 2003 installed and I run the backup utility via the "run" in Windows.. is there another, better backup utility?

Quote: “the backup is running on the Exchange server” I assume that ntbackup is running on the exchange server that you want to backup, right? You can’t see the database (Store) that shows in the picture of this article? How about the storage group? Please start NTBackup, the “System Information” in the “Accessories”, and then verify if the following two modules are running in the “Loaded Modules” · eseback2.dll (Loaded by store.exe) · esebcli2.dll (Loaded by NTBackup) Please open the “Local Security Settings” tool, expand “Local Policies” and select “User rights Assignments”. In the right pane, double-click “Back up files and directories”, verify that “Backup Operators” and “Administrators” have the “Effective Policy Setting” box checked. By default it will be checked and inherited for both accounts Please disable “Domain Policy” at the domain level, and check the result again Please rename the Edbbcli.dll, reboot the server, and check the result again James Luo TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. You don't have to. When you bring up NT backup on the same server as the Exchange, it should see the storage groups.
