Not receiving email from the outside - Exchange log partition running out of space
Hello all,We're currently not receiving email from the outside. When attempting to do troubleshooting, here is what happens:telnet ipaddressofmailserver 25ehlomail from:username@yahoo.com452 4.3.1 Insufficient system resourcesNow, after looking this up it appears it could be a problem with the size of the partition the Exchange logs reside on. Currently we only have 1.52GB free. Is there a way to resolve this problem? Please give me step by step instructions as I am a beginner at Exchange. Thanks!

Thanks for the assistance, think Ihave resolved this. What I did was went into EdgeTransport.exe.config and modified the following values:<add key=QueueDatabasePath value = /><add key=QueueDatabaseLoggingPath value = />to a folder on a partition with more space. I then restarted the Exchange Transport Service and mail flow resumed.

Got another question, but it is related to this.OK, so basically I moved my Queue Database from my D:partition (where the Exchange Logpartition), isto my F: partition, which has ample free space. Now, my D: Exchange Log partition has 1.38GB of free space left. This is the partition that has E000000xxxx.log files. Is this enough free space or should I start being worried? This is Exchange 2007.

Hi, by default, the high level of hard disk drive space utilization is calculated by using the following formula: 100*(hard disk drive size - fixed constant) / hard disk drive size In the release to manufacturing (RTM) version of MicrosoftExchangeServer2007, the value of fixed constant is 4GB.In MicrosoftExchangeServer2007 Service Pack1(SP1), the value of fixed constant is 500MB.Hope this helpsRegards

I guess I'm just wondering, why didn't the E000000xxxx.log files get moved over when I made the changes to the QueueDatabasePath and QueueDatabaseLoggingPath values? Isthere a difference between the Queue database and the log files?

HI, You have did configuration only step. You must move the current database and if you want to reuse existing logs you can copy them manually to new location. These steps nicely described in below TechNet article. Resources How to Change the Location of the Queue DatabaseRegards Chinthaka Shameera | MCITP: EA | MCSE: M | http://howtoexchange.wordpress.com/

It probably would have been a better idea to use the"Move-TransportDatabase.ps1" script to accomplish this. It's in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Scriptsakes care of setting the correct permission on the newdirectory structure, starting and stopping service, moving files, etc.---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP--- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

HI, This is enough, if you want only change the database path and database logging path. If you want to reuse the existing queue database at new location please fallow below steps. 1. Create the directory where you want to keep the queue database. Make sure that the correct permissions are applied to the directory. 2. Open the following file by using Notepad: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Bin\EdgeTransport.exe.config. Modify the following line in the <appSettings> section: <add key="QueueDatabasePath" value="<LocalPath>" /> For example, to change the location to "C:\Queue\QueueDB", modify the QueueDatabasePath parameter as follows: <add key="QueueDatabasePath" value="C:\Queue\QueueDB" /> 3. Save and close the EdgeTransport.exe.config file. 4. Stop the Microsoft Exchange Transport service. 5. Copy the files Mail.que and Trn.chk from the original location to the new location. 6. Start the Microsoft Exchange Transport service. 7. Remove the unused Mail.que and Trn.chk files from the original location Resources How to Change the Location of the Queue Database Regards Chinthaka Shameera | MCITP: EA | MCSE: M | http://howtoexchange.wordpress.com/

Thank you for this step by step guide Chinthaka, its much appreciated. As you can see in the fifth post in this thread, I only went to step 4 in your guide, and then I restarted the Microsoft Exchange Transport Service. I was unaware that I had to do the rest when this happened on Tuesday. So now mail flow has resumed since then, and it is Wednesday. My question is,should I still copy the Mail.que and Trn.chk files from the original location to the new location? I don't want to lose anything that came in through email between Tuesday and Wednesday. Thanks.

If you fallow the above steps, you did only disable the back presser monitoring. Then transport services doesnt monitor Exchange resources.Regards Chinthaka Shameera | MCITP: EA | MCSE: M | http://howtoexchange.wordpress.com/

I'm sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I was not following those steps, I was following these: 1. Start the Microsoft Exchange Transport service. 7. Remove the unused Mail.que and Trn.chk files from the original location I only went to step 4 in your guide, but did not copy the Mail.que and Trn.chk files to the new location. I was unaware that I had to do this when the problem fist arose. So now mail flow has resumed since then, and it is Thursday. My question is,should I still copy the Mail.que and Trn.chk files from the original location to the new location? I don't want to lose anything that came in through email between Tuesday and Thursday.

Hi,You cannot get back. After you restart the Microsoft Exchange Transport service. The existing database files are left at the old location. However, they are no longer used.If you want to change the location of the queue database but reuse the existing queue database files, you must move or copy the database files when the Microsoft Exchange Transport service is stopped.more details, How to Change the Location of the Queue Database http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125177.aspxFrank Wang

HI, As Frank said, you cannot reuse old Mail.que and Trn.chk files after you re start the transport services, no longer used. So in this case you have restarted the transport services and please forgot about old two files.Regards Chinthaka Shameera | MCITP: EA | MCSE: M | http://howtoexchange.wordpress.com/
