Not default email client

This is a weird one.

Laptop. Connected to work network. No roaming profile, just networked MY DOCUMENTS. Outlook 2013 is set as the default email client. When the user double clicks an *.MSG file that is on her desktop Outlook opens up the message just fine. If she copies that same MSG file to her MY DOCUMENTS folder when she tries to open it Windows 7 will say "Either there is no default email client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Office Outlook and set it as the default email client". And Outlook still opens the MSG file, but just keeps popping up that snagging error.

Anyone have any suggestions on this one?

Hi,

By "networked MY DOCUMENTS", would you please detail this a bit? Where are the files stored?

Based on the error message, I've found three kbs:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/813745

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2991457

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2459779

All different scenarios but all registry related. You can try to locate the following subkey in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients\Mail\Microsoft Outlook

Select and delete the subkey, run a repair of Office from Control Panel -> Programs and Features, check if the problem persists.

Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.
