Normal users can able to configure pop3 profile of other users using outlook or outlook express and can send mail even when pop3 service is disabled.
Hi All, I have a weired issue. Environment: 1 OWA FE server-Exchange server 2003 SP2 Exchange server 2003 BE server cluster Normal users can able to configure other users profile using either outlook or outlook express and can able to send mail even when the pop3 service is disabled from services and POP3 virtual server is stopped on both FE and BE servers, we haven't created POP3 resource in cluster. So far: checked permissions and none has Send As Recieve As permissions,no open relay, EXBPA clean,no 3rd party running on server, no open relay at ISA, no open relay at connector. Any help on this is highly appriciated. Thanks

Well, sending and receiving are two different protocols. If your POP service is disabled - or at least stopped - then that's that. POP is unavailable. No receiving will happen at the client. However, that doesn't prevent the clients from configuring a POP client; it just prevents the client from accessing email using POP3. Sending is a function of SMTP, not POP3. If your users are authenticating then sure, they'll be able to send email. "Asif Kazi" wrote in message news:e7d6bb80-a226-4c78-8686-be3d5d6cdfe2... Hi All, I have a weired issue. So what, If POP3 is disabled and all users are able to send mail.. Users cann't receive mail (coz pop3 is receiving protocol) but send mail (SMTP is being used here). Isn't it? Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I was concern about normal users sending mail by configuring other users profile , i would like to disable, where none used use telnet and send mail. Eg: telnet mail 25 mail from:<Other User> Rcpt to:ceo@ceo.com data I would like to disable mail from, where none should use send mail on behalf of others. May be we can do this using SMTP virtual server by disabling anonymous permissions. Please correct me. Thanks

They can't send as anyone else because they would have to authenticate. Sure, they can configure a client with the wrong names and such-like but have to log on as themselves. Exchange will take care of that. And no, you can't disable anonymous because that's how servers on the Internet send to you. "Asif Kazi" wrote in message news:4b554b4f-f030-460b-874b-2a87e2435efb... Yes, Mark is absolutely right ! You can send mail from any sender id but using your credential. Here you can test it like this Try to send this mail from a workstation which is not in domain, then you can check what is going on ! Let me know if you still able to send mail Thanks

Hi Asif Kazi, Any update for your issue? Mark gave good information. One user could use other user's account credential to config the outlook express/outlook (use smtp), and use it to send email, but can not receive email using pop3. Regards! gavin
