New? Excel file size DOUBLES when uploaded to SharePoint

Using Office 365 Pro with SharePoint Online.

I have an Excel file that is 7,707 KB on my local machine, but increases to 14,949 KB. The file has a Power Query, Power View and Power Map. About a month ago, I had a similar file that was 2,097 KB, and when I uploaded, it remained that size. I've tried saving through Excel to SharePoint, and from SharePoint uploading from my local drive. I don't see a reason why the file size is doubling. Am I doing something wrong, or did something change recently?

Any ideas?

Hi jctvfc,

Based on your description, I want to ask you several questions about your issue.

1. If this issue only appeared in Excel files?

2. Did you test this issue in other Office programs?

3. Did the size of all excel files grow to 2 times?

I tested your issue in my own environment, my environment is Windows several 2012, Office and Sharepoint 2013. And I get the following result:

         SIZE
Before After
Excel 10.8KB 18KB
Word 96KB 102KB
TXT 9.56KB 10KB

As far as I know, SharePoint will add properties to files, e.g. Title, Author...

I suggest you test it and check if it is the reason of your issue.

Thank you for responding. I have tested from two different PCs and with different file types and all grow except the .txt file. This was not happening when the report library was initiated; file sizes were the same locally and on SharePoint.

The image below shows files on SharePoint (top) and on my local PC (bottom). Both "billedMap" files use PowerQuery, Power View and Power Map. The one entitled "billedMap_062314-062415_extended.xlsx" was uploaded previously, with no change in file size. As you can see, the 0714_0715 file increased dramatically. Since there is a limit on Power View files loaded to SharePoint opening within the browser (10MG), this presents a big problem and drastic limitation. I purposely kept the 0714_0715 file below 10MG so it could be viewed within the browser.
