Networking with shared drives on a router

Hi there,

I have recently set up a new router and attached 2 drives to it using the USB ports. I can map to these fine using their web addresses on the router, yet I am having problems with all Office 2010 programs and also with Windows 7 Photo Viewer in that these programs will not save to the mapped drives. Other open source programs do not seem to have this problem.

I have searched extensively and found a whole host of very complicated potential solutions, including directly editing the registry, applying a hotfix (that subsequently told me it did not apply to my system despite the fact I have the exact symptoms it is designed for), and ad hoc moving of files from one location to another.

When I open the properties of any folder on the shared drives, the security tab tells me that the requested information is either unavailable or cannot be displayed, yet editing the security is another one of the solutions I have found that has subsequently been fruitless for me. Office also refuses to allow me to add my shared drives to its trusted locations.

Surely it cannot be so difficult for Windows and other Microsoft programs to treat a mapped drive on a router like any other drive, after all, all the open source software I have works just fine.

Any help would be appreciated.
