Needed DC's for a resource forest configuration
Hi allI'm about to setup a resource forest to consolidate our exchange environment. We currently have 3 accountforests with several sites in all. The plan is to setup a new forest for exchange and migrate all email to this single organization. All clients are supposed to be running i cached mode due to performance of WAN links, do I need to setup DC's for the resource forest in all sites or is it enough to have them where the Exchange servers are? Are there any traffic between the clients and the DC's in the resource forest?RegardsPeter

Being that you're using a Resource domain and the Exchange 2007 will be in this site it would be enough to have the DCs for the resource forest in that domain. However, keep in mind that if any WAN links go down and there is authentication going against that domain you may have authentication issues if a GC is not replicated in that physical site.Make sense? ThanksI've read these articles already, but they say nothing about domain controller needed. Is all addressbook information taken from the exchange server? What if someone expands a distribution group is that info also sent from the Exc server?I just want to be sure that I don't need any DC's in the remote sites for the exchange forest. There will be DC's from the account forests at the same physical site as the Exchange forest.Peter

The Address book is a result of what is in AD. Basically you're going to have your Exchange mail accounts in the resource doamin and then have linked accounts from the children domains to the resource domain via a forest trust.Having a D/C in the other AD site would not be required unless you have some communiation concerns. If you lose connectivity to the site (physical) where exchange resides then you're going to lose connectivity anyway so a DC in the other site will not be necessary. Now, if you are planning on having Exchange servers in multiple sites (physical) and those sites exist in AD sites and services you will need a GC ( I recommend two) of the resouce domain in each AD site where Exchange is deployed. I hope that makes sense. :)SF - MCITP:EMA, MCTS
