Multiple domains under 1 Exchange 2007 server
I want to know how I can setup multiple seperate domains in exchnage 2007. We have 2 different parts of our business that have different logging requirements, so multiple people need to have both domain addresses and be able to reply to users with each different address. Not sure how clear this sounds so follow the example below. A user, lets say UserA is in domain Big.com and has had domain Small.com added as an address and can receive mail from both. His reply domain is Big.com. Is there a way to allow him to select which domain or address he wants to send or reply from? Does this require two completely seperate domains of which he has 2 seperate email accounts? Thanks, let me know if more detail is neeeded. Thanks! Tony

If you tell Exchange to receive emails for several domains, it will want to automatically generate email addresses in all of those domains for all your users. If you have only a few users in one domain, then you can tell AD not to automatically update those users' email addresses. If you have a pretty even spread, then that will cause you the most work, since there can only be one default domain for reply addresses. If you configure (in Exchange) the default SMTP address for a user, then that will be the default address used for sending emails. But the user can get Outlook to show the From field, so that they can choose another. Basically, you can give a user as many email addresses as you like, in any domain (although it makes sense to use domains for which the server is also receiving), and you can decide which is the default one for sending.Outlook Web Access For PDA , OWA For WAP www.owa-pda.com email a@t leederbyshire d.0.t c.0.m

Thanks for the response! I tried using the From field and the email bounces back saying that I do not have send on behalf privileges... How do hosted exchange services work? You typically login to those with your full email address but i can't imagine they are setting up an individual domain for each account...

It will only work if you put one of your own personal Exchange SMTP email addresses in there - you can't use anything you like. I've not much idea about hosted services - I've never used one. But remember - you don't actually have to set up a domain (in the sense of installing a Windows Domain Controller) to be able to use an email address in that domain. An SMTP domain is completely different to a Windows domain. For an email SMTP domain, all you have to do is to add the domain to the list of domains that Exchange will accept email for, then add one or more addresses in that domain to the list of email addresses for the user account.Outlook Web Access For PDA , OWA For WAP www.owa-pda.com email a@t leederbyshire d.0.t c.0.m

I did try using one of the other domains in the From box... I put in the secondary email address I gave myself for the other domain. It bounces back saying I don't have send on behalf permissions... Thanks for you help!

Is the domain part of the secondary email address you used in the list of accepted domains configured in Exchange Management Console (Org Config/Hub Transport)?Outlook Web Access For PDA , OWA For WAP www.owa-pda.com email a@t leederbyshire d.0.t c.0.m

You need two separate email accounts, or if using one then need third party tool to selectively choose the from or reply. If you created two separate accounts did you grant send as rights to each others accounts? Open ADUC, security tab, and grant each other send as rights. Well, now I feel silly. But I'm sure that you could send from a secondary SMTP address last time I tried it. I have to admit it was a loooong time ago, though. But now I have E2010, and I find that yes, I can have multiple email addresses, but I can only send from the one that is currently selected as the primary one. So, it's doable if you want to configure a primary address for each user, but not if you want to be able to regularly send from either.Outlook Web Access For PDA , OWA For WAP www.owa-pda.com email a@t leederbyshire d.0.t c.0.m

Yeah not sure if it was working at point in beta or not, iirc outlook 2010 was planned on supporting but it didn't. The only way is to use outlook 2010 which allows you to at least create 2 profiles now and from there you can choose which email profile you want to send from.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

I've pretty much resigned to the fact that there is no easy way to do this... What bothers me is that I can't add multiple exchange mailboxes to outlook. That would make life much easier. I guess for now, I will just add a second account and add it in outlook as an IMAP account. Thanks!

Hi tlitterio, For this issue, you can create two profiles or add two accounts in one profile to achieve the goal. If you create two profiles, you can choose the profile( which you want to send from) to send and receive emails. If you add two accounts in one profile, you can add one Exchange account and one IMAP(or pop3) account.
