Multiple attachments Different file names, Same Content
Hi Guys, I've got the same issue as stated below. And actually have been doing the resolution that was provided. (Clearing up Outlook temporary internet files) I would like to check with you Microsoft guys if there's any other known resolution that can be done with this. See thread below: ========================================================================================= 7/27/2006 3:53:01 PM Multiple attachments Different file names, Same Content Outlook 2003 Rel 11.6 SP1 PROBLEM: Multiple attachments in an email will display different file names, but the content is identical to the first attachment. A person1 had an email with 3 attachments. She selected two of them and forwarded them to person2 to have CDs burned. Person2 opened the email and saved the attachments locally before burning them to disc. The person1 opened both files from the burned CDs and they were identical in content. Another instance. A person sent 10 PDF files to a client. The client received 10 individual files, with different file names. But when they opened it, the content was identical or duplicates of the first file. I think Outlook is messing up when it tries to grab these files and attach them to emails. It is losing its place and grabbing the same file multiple times and adding a different file name to it. 7/31/2006 3:05:16 PM Re: Multiple attachments Different file names, Same Content That sort of thing can happen if Outlook's secure temporary folder gets full. When you open file attachments that are considered safe, Outlook 2003, as an extra precaution, places these attachments in a subdirectory under the your Temporary Internet Files directory. The name of the new subdirectory is unknown, is randomly generated, and takes on the following form. C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKxxx Try navigating to this folder and deleting it's contents. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817878 Attachments remain in the Outlook Secure Temporary File folder when you exit Outlook 2003 Hal -- Hal Hostetler, CPBE -- hhh@kvoa.com Senior Engineer/MIS -- MS MVP-Print/Imaging -- WA7BGX http://www.kvoa.com -- "When News breaks, we fix it!" Did anyone ever get to the bottom of the this we have the same issue. 3 seperate PDF attachments were sent in an email. If you check the sent items. All 3 attachments have different filenames but display the same content. Outlook 2003 SP3. Workaround of clearing the outlook security area clears the issue but dont really want to be checking every sent email to make sure that the files have been sent correctly..

Hello, I have encountered this issue before, but deleting all the files from the users OLK files always did the trick for me each time. Is the question here: Is there another solution to this problem? For users who have this issue consistently due to large quantity of attachments, I just created a shortcut to their OLK files in their My Docs or Desktop, and then can go in and clear everything out when they need to.

Hi, As we have encountered this issue also, and the known resolution seems to be the cleaning of the Temp folders, is there more informations that we could use to prevent this from happening? e.g. at what size does the olkxxx folder passes its failure point? (what they mean by full?) should we put a kind of shcedule task that cleans it every day? Thankks very much

Hi, There is one other possible cause that has nothing to do with the temp folder. It has to do with an apparent bug in the way data is transfered from the Office clipboard to the regular Windows clipboard, and you can reproduce it as follows. 1 Create a new Outlook message and put two or three attachments in it. 2 Select the attachments and select Copy. 3 Close the message window, you should get a do you want to save changes message and then a do you want to transfer data from the office clipboard message. Answer the save changes message either way, but say Yes to the transfer clipboard message. 4 Open a new message, paste the attachments into it, and send it to someone. This message, when it arrives will have three identical files with different names. If you had not closed the original message between the copy and the paste the files would have been sent correctly. The moral I try to convey is avoid copy and pasting files directly from message to message, but if you must, don't close the source message after doing the copy but before doing the paste. -Peter

Our user who is experiencing this problem has NOT been closing out the original message before pasting and sending the email and is still having this issue so that is not the fix in our case. We will try the temp file clearing. Thank you.
