Moving mailboxes across domains in the same forest
I need to move a mailbox to a different domain in the same forest though. I am trying to use the move mailbox utility of Exchange System Manager and I get the following error: The action could not be completed because the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is unavailable. Be sure the service is running and you have network connectivity to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer. I also get the following errors in the Application event log: Event Type:ErrorEvent Source:MSExchangeAdminEvent Category:Move Mailbox Event ID:1008Date:30/07/2008Time:12:23:03 PMUser:N/AComputer:XXXXXXDescription:Unable to move mailbox 'XXXXXXXXXXXXX'. My active directory setup includes aparent domain and two child domains. The mailbox I need to move is on one of the child domains and I want to move it to the other child domain. I installed Exchange System Manager on a dc in the parent domain and tried to move the mailbox from the parent dc and still get the same errors.

Are their any firewalls seperating any of these Exchange servers, or are all domains on fully-routable segments?

be sure the account you use to perform the move has admin (exchange and domain) rights in the source and target domain. Also netbios name resolution to both exchange servers and a GC in each domain from the machine running the mailbox move.

The target domain is behind a firewall but no trafic coming from the source domain is blocked (ie all ports are opened for the source domain.

I was loged as the Administrator of the parent domain. Checked this account and it has full admin rights on the Exchange organisation. Still have to check if it has admin rights on the target domain though.

Generally I've found that if I can view the stores and queues on the target and source servers I'm good to go. On most of the big cross domain moves I've done I used an Enterprise admin account with Exchange Admin rights and local admin on both target & source Exchange servers. Maybe overkill but if you have an EA accout it works great. If your site is really tight on security permissions there aremore granular security settings that can be made.. Thisway isquick and easy.
